It’s the post that no one ever wants to make. On Friday of last week I was made aware that my postion at Rocket no longer exists, effectively immediately. I took the weekend to digest and reflect, here’s where I’m at: I’m hurt, but I’m thankful for my experience and the knowledge I’ve gained. I’m comforted by knowing that in my time there I was able to make an impact in several ways. I built processes from the ground up and improved upon existing ones. I increased engagement and morale by taking it upon myself to plan in office events. I motivated others by sharing my experience in leadership panels. I mentored several interns and individuals early on in their careers. Most importantly, I showed up for my team every single day. I consistently advocated for them and pushed decisions in a team member focused perspective. I took a vested interest in their growth and development. On the difficult days, I created a safe place for them to land and recharge before getting back into the fray. I made it my priority to ensure that they felt supported. That will remain the most rewarding part of my time in that role. Lastly, I’m excited to take these skills on to my next opportunity. With that in mind, any support or leads from the community are more than welcome. I’m particularly interested in leadership and project management focused roles, but I’m open to other suggestions as well. #servantleadership #opentowork

During Week 1 of a new job, I focus on 3 things. 1. Observe – You learn a lot from watching others interact and operate. Stay curious. Keep your eyes and ears open. Ask questions. 2. Absorb – The amount of information coming your way will seem overwhelming. Don't try and memorize it all. Listen, take notes, and dive into documentation; just absorb what you can naturally. You and your team can fill the gaps later. 3. Validate – In many ways, taking a new job is a gut decision. You don't fully know what you are getting into until you start. Are you still excited? Are there opportunities to challenge yourself? If you end Week 1 and you've validated your gut decision was the right move, it was a good week. Week 1 is in the books with Skyward. I've got a ton more to learn but can guarantee this was the best move to make. Excited to share more with everyone and appreciate the kind words/support. If you know it, say it! As you've come to learn, I sometimes am overconfident. This confidence has backfired occasionally, but it's also gotten me raises, title changes, and even a job. About a week after being hired at Verity, I asked the CEO why they chose me for the position. The answer amused me. She told me that the president was actually the one I impressed the most because I told him he was wrong. Once again, I was telling the president of a company that I was interviewing at that he was wrong. After a quick chuckle, she shared that every time I told him he was wrong, I presented him with why and then a solution on how to fix or change it. But, it all worked out and I spent almost 6 years there working beside him. Lesson Learned: Speak with confidence if you are the subject matter expert in the room regardless of the audience. But, remember to do it respectfully.
