👀 Ideo (who’s worked with the likes of Apple, Coca Cola) layoffs a third of its staff and plans to restructure operations. A pivot for design firms is coming fast. AI can’t replace design, but I believe it will force the design industry to reposition their value in the market like many other disciplines. #productdesign #design #ai

IDEO, the storied design firm that popularized Design Thinking, will never be the same company again. In a previously unreported event in early October, CEO Derek Robson announced a plan to cut 125 jobs, or 25% of its global workforce. The company will also close its Munich and Tokyo offices. However, if you include previous layoffs this year, IDEO will be letting go a third of all employees in 2023. And if you trace back to 2020, IDEO has actually lost about half its headcount. Reporting the story for Fast Company, I spoke with several inside sources and reviewed internal communications to unearth what’s gone wrong—and understand how, as one former employee claims, IDEO has gone from $300 million in revenue annually to $100 million in just a few years. https://lnkd.in/d94UPQWt

Thought leadership is evolving. It will be fascinating to see what comes to replace #designthinking.

“Aren’t you the #designthinking guys?” “Yes, and..” Got a lot of DMs over the weekend about this article, so posting some thoughts: * Design thinking is not dead. The mindset and process remain central, especially as #AI augmentation becomes the norm. * Using Christensen’s Disruptive Innovation model, IDEO was harvesting hundreds of millions of high margin profits at the top of the cycle. * However, companies that “get it” brought the functionality in-house, e.g., Salesforce, delivering the same services to their customers at a lower cost. * Big name consulting firms (McKinsey & Company, Bain & Company, and Boston Consulting Group (BCG) created “bolt on” design offerings to keep existing clients’ innovation work in-house. * That left IDEO in the awkward middle. After planting their flag on #designthinking, they were type-cast and couldn’t authentically expand or pivot. * Line extensions like IDEO.org and IDEO U reinforced their existing offering, but were lower margin and did not future-proof IDEO from eventual disruption. Instead, The Berkeley Innovation Group is positioned as the disrupter by leading the implementation of Design Thinking 2.0, ensuring that AI augments, but does not replace, humans to increase efficiency and profitability. If you agree, please like this post, give us a follow, and share your thoughts below.

Design Thinking is not an era - It's a strategic methodology. A mindset or lens through which people & organizations can approach a problem or opportunity and overlay the consumer's perspective (empathetically) and ask “how will these decisions or solutions impact the consumer facing experience & environment?” Design Thinking is not dying and will never die. Mark Wilson It may feel like its moment of limelight and headlining is dying, but only because it (as a discipline & mindset) is now clearly embedded in core company structure and business strategies across the globe in nearly every industry. The only thing that IDEO's size reductions and layoffs show is that Design Thinking is no longer a new and novel approach and something a specialized service provider (like IDEO) must teach and be paid to educate organizations on at such a scale... Thanks to companies like IDEO and the greater design community over the last 20+ years, Design Thinking and its disciples are now prolific and ubiquitous across nearly every leading organization and in every industry. It will fortunately continue to feed better product, service, and brand experiences across the globe for years and years to come. So design community - what’s next? #designthinking #innovation #strategy #transformation #future

IDEO is one of the world’s leading design firms since its inception in 1991, having collaborated with companies ranging from Apple to The Coca-Cola Company. On October 2nd, Ideo CEO Derek Robson announced widespread layoffs reaching upto 25% of its global staff. During my time as a Stanford University PhD student, I loved Ideo and their brainstorming sessions. However, after years of studying choice, I now realize that brainstorming exercises – as fun as they can be – are bias-making exercises. Brainstorming can create fun products like toys and cool toothbrushes, but it can’t help solve more pressing problems. The problem with brainstorming is that it’s based on outdated science. It was invented 85 years ago, in 1938! Decades of research on decision-making has shown that brainstorming can lead us to gather and organize information in a biased way. Bottom line: the brain doesn’t get its best ideas through brainstorming. There have been incredible advances in neuro and cognitive science, as well as the advent of new tools like AI and ML. Given this, individuals, companies, and governments can come up with better solutions to create meaningful choices. My Think Bigger method takes advantage of this new science; thus, my hope is that people can use TB to generate innovate solutions to their challenges. #ideo #brainstorming https://lnkd.in/eRgPXHgk

What a morning it was! 🎉 ProductParty kicked off again, bringing together an incredible mix of Product Designers, Product Managers, and User Researchers leaders from London’s top product companies. 🌟🥐 Many engaging discussions covering: - Best practices for org design to encourage cross-tribe collaboration among product teams. - Emphasizing the importance of making user insights accessible and building a culture that is open to listening to insights from user research. - How AI-led research can help small product teams get started with research. - Why product teams should collaborate with researchers on research, and how UX researchers can have the most impact. - The “optimal” ratio of designers to researchers (4-6 designers to 1 researcher was a popular pattern). - The (many) obstacles hiring design managers and applicants face in the hiring process. Thank you to those who joined to our event, creating a safe space for the London Product community to connect, share insights, and fuel their creativity. ✨ If you're a Product Designer, Product Manager, or User Researcher and want to connect with fellow professionals in London, join the waitlist to stay informed about future events https://lnkd.in/e6vHQmSn Helen Devine, Sophie Aldebert, Mrunali Bhangale, Adam Bradley, Benaz Irani, Liz Hamburger, Alessandra Canella, Jason Castaneda, Dr. Ailish McLaughlin, Razel Villanueva, Hannah Patrick, Rachel Jeans, 🍏 Kieren Messenger, Mariam Taraif, Anna Barker, Paul David Price, Chris Lewis, Ivy Mukherjee, Kishan Wadhia, 🐴 Douglas Chan, Rachel Ilan Simpson, Chris Wright and Jamie Beech #ProductParty #UX #Product #Community
