My biggest takeaway from FreightWaves SONAR State of Freight: the emerging normalization of spot / contract rates. When spot/contract rates were inversed last year and in 2022, there was no incentive to honor bids; shippers were better off going to the spot market. We are seeing the spread is more normalized today... which means routing guides and bids start to matter again. For those of us who prefer the glass half full, we may be entering the upward lift from the depths of this cycle.

Along with the decline in the Architecture Billing Index and freight disruption stats in the Panama and Suez Canals, Supply-chain disruption needs to be baked into all economic forecasts. 📊 The Cass Freight Index for shipments took a hit in April, dropping 1.6% from March and 4% year-over-year. The biggest contributors being a late Lunar New Year, the Baltimore bridge collapse, and private fleets snatching up spot freight. Freight expenditures plunged 16.8% y/y, and although the Truckload Linehaul Index decreased by 3.8% y/y, it inched up 0.1% from March. Notably, Schneider National saw positive contract rate negotiations for the first time in six quarters. Despite these hurdles, there's hope on the horizon with potential economic growth and disinflation. Stay ahead in these challenging times!
