✊🏿🧡 CELEBRATING JUNETEENTH: Thank you to the Black Culture Collective at Orange County Social Services Agency for having The OCEA Hot Dog Wagon at their Juneteenth Celebration Wednesday, June 19! SSA’s Black Culture Collective consists of about 60 members, and is a revamp of the former African American Roundtable, which was established at SSA in the 90’s. The group assembled the lunch to celebrate Juneteenth—a recognition of June 19, 1865—when news of freedom reached enslaved people in Texas, marking a pivotal moment in American history. Juneteenth celebrates liberation, resilience, and the ongoing fight for equality. “It was a great turnout. We had people coming from different locations—from Garden Grove, OCPC, Santa Ana—not just Eckhoff,” said Rebecca Polee, a Staff Specialist in Children & Family Services at SSA, and a member of the Black Culture Collective. “We sometimes get so involved and invested in the work and the service that we do. It’s nice to have this downtime, to engage, socialize, and bring some history.” Juneteenth became a federally-recognized holiday in 2021, and subsequently a State holiday. The recognition of Juneteenth as a holiday was prioritized by our membership and included in our proposal to the County during negotiations in 2023. The County initially refused, later offering Juneteenth if another holiday or 20 hours from PIP were forfeited. The negotiations team opposed these concessions and suggested alternative solutions, which the County rejected. Negotiations continued, highlighting that every gain requires trade-offs. If establishing Juneteenth as a holiday is of interest to you, please say so when the next negotiations survey comes your way prior to us returning to the table in 2026. Honoring Juneteenth: A Celebration of Freedom and Resilience Today marks three years since Juneteenth became a federal holiday. Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved Black Americans, recognizing the day on June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce the end of slavery – a full two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. This day has grown from a Texas celebration to a national symbol of freedom and resilience for all Black Americans. At Women In Bio-San Francisco Bay Area, we honor the invaluable contributions of Black Americans in the sciences, the workplace, and our communities. Our commitment to creating opportunities for traditionally disenfranchised groups extends beyond Juneteenth, as we strive for inclusivity every day. Juneteenth serves as a reminder to support your local Black-owned businesses and foster diversity and inclusion in all aspects of life. Let’s celebrate and uplift each other not only on this holiday, but every day. #Juneteenth #Juneteenth2024 #FreedomDay #EqualityForAll #DiversityAndInclusion #HonoringJuneteenth #DiversityinSTEM #WomenInBio

February is Black History Month (BHM), a time to recognize and celebrate Black communities and the contributions of Black Canadians while amplifying their voices and perspectives and showing commitment to combatting anti-Black racism and discrimination. Anti-Black racism and systemic barriers are present in the housing sector and disproportionally impact access to housing and homeownership. According to Statistics Canada (2021), only 45% of Black people in Canada own their own home, the lowest level of homeownership amongst any group. This means many Black families in Canada have been unable to access the benefits that come with owning a home – including the ability to attain social and financial stability, build equity, and transform their future. At Habitat for Humanity PEI, removing barriers to homeownership for all people is core to our mission, and addressing this racial disparity is foundational to our work. We believe that housing for all cannot be fully realized without combating the racism and housing discrimination experienced by the Black community. #BHM #BlackHistoryMonth #Honour #Homeownership #Support #Community
