Applications are now OPEN! The SJN Student Media Challenge is about helping student newsrooms discover and report solutions journalism. We do that with $7,500 in funding, extensive training in SoJo, and coaching on whatever you need along the way. Applications are now open to find the eight newsrooms who will fill out the 2024-25 cohort, covering youth mental health through a solutions lens. We could try to channel some Gen Z voice for this, but we won't. You're welcome! You won't have to see us do a TikTok dance. We won't mention TFW or any of your exes. We won't even reference our rizz, though it is abundant. Last we checked, young people don't want adults to be cool. They want us to be helpful. They want us to give them a ladder to something brighter, to new possibilities. (Sorry, we're in our Honesty Era.) So get all the info at the link, and be the adult who pitches in or the student who finds the incredible opportunity. You've got worlds to open. https://lnkd.in/gwZTbRnj

After working for a while in journalism and communication professions, it's rather difficult to maintain a clear scale of 'success.' I have had presentations before hundreds of individuals; some of my texts were read and liked by many thousands, others by only a couple of people. Metrics and scales are always debatable. I try to think of it as an eternal journey (even if it sounds very pathetic, I guess). I aim to be open but balanced and talk about things that are important, such as creativity, culture, and freedom of thought. Here, in this 'official' webinar about the psychology of learning and teaching for small groups of participants, I collaborated with my colleague from the state service. Together, we represented two sides of the same coin: free artists and state clerks, both with strong and weak personal features.

Today’s is the last of my 10 essays on the common good, and I want to focus on what each of us can do to discover, spread, and insist upon public truth. When we accept lies as facts, or illogic as logic, we lose the shared reality necessary to tackle our common problems. We become powerless. Let me explain.

Does this sound familiar to you? You finish an interview with a reporter and think ‘That went well! Can’t wait to see what they write.' Then the story gets comes out, you see it, and then ask, ‘Why the heck did the reporter do that?’ This is an all too common question. Often the key to answering this question is to gain a clear understanding of how reporters operate. What do reporters desire? How do reporters write stories? What do reporters find interesting? Understanding what motivates reporters can help you not only get the quote you want in a story, but actually shape the story that appears. Want to learn more? Join us on Friday, July 28 at 10 am ET to learn how to engage with reporters effectively. Register today at https://lnkd.in/eTZvyw85

Great article by Susan King, whom I know and greatly respect. A relevant point here is that the donor, a well respected journalist and publisher, has spent a life dedicated to facts, but unfortunately, the "facts" contained in a resume, job application, or tenure packet are often seen as "lesser than" or less relevant just because they are those of a woman or minority. That is implicit bias and we all have it in one way or another. Guarding against it isn't "affirmative action" (though I do think leveling the playing field DOES require intentionality). Why are the amazing resume and accomplishments of Nikole Hannah-Jones somehow not adding up to enough? So many studies show that when names and gender/race/ etc indicators are erased from resumes, different judgements are often made. My ask is that donors also check their biases at the door when expressing an opinion (and hopefully not a demand) and rely on the underlying facts and not those they see through glasses clouded, albeit often unintentionally, by those biases.
