Did you know that hospitality is Biblical? We are not talking just in the New Testament, we a speaking of Old Testament, as well. The art and principles of hospitality go all the way back to Abraham’s story in Genesis 12, 14, 18, and 19.
The actual word, hospitality, can be found in the Bible four times: Romans 12:13, 1 Timothy 5:10, Hebrews 13:2 and 1 Peter 4:9.
The Bible says this about hospitality: Hospitality is about honoring God by obeying His command to “contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality”. It is also about loving other Christians. 1 Peter 4:9 says, “Show hospitality to one another without grumbling”. In essence this means to be friendly and inviting even when you do not feel like it. It is my belief that we all get the picture and understand that we should be hospitable to strangers, in the hospitality industry known as guests, but if we really think about what Peter is saying in 1 Peter 4:9 is that we are to share hospitality with each other.
Hospitality is not just for those we have recently met, new guests, but also for the people we regularly see, regular guests, as well as employees and each other.
“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in.”
“When a stranger sojourns with you in your land, you shall not do him wrong.”
“When you give a banquet, invite the poor, crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed.”
