In our roles, we often find ourselves in dynamic relationships with teachers, students, and colleagues. Yet, sometimes, we make assumptions and implicit agreements that can lead to confusion and missed opportunities for growth. It's not about dictating what people should do, but rather about illuminating those hidden agreements. As coaches and leaders, we are no strangers to the challenges of seeking clarity. The fear of appearing incompetent or imposing can loom over us, especially when working within a power dynamic. However, embracing these conversations is essential for a thriving educational ecosystem. In our roles, these dialogues aren't signs of weakness; they're reflections of our commitment to clear, effective communication, leading to improved teacher-student relationships and ultimately, enhanced student outcomes. Reflecting on what Engineering is about, I realize the immense value that mentorship holds. I'm thrilled to pay it forward and give some time to being a mentor to a few World Food Programme Engineers, to share knowledge and help others grow. #MentorTogether The main takeaway from the first mentoring session was that engineers in non-traditional areas of work want reassurance that their skills from their work will transfer back into engineering when they pivot from non-engineering roles to being project managers as well as technical engineers. I am most optimistic about opportunities for those engineers in the humanitarian field. The first mentoring conversation was simply an introduction and an opportunity to explore where what I do and know can be of assistance to the career of other engineers. What I learnt from the mentoring of an engineer, qualified in electronic engineering and communications engineering, was that there is curiosity about learning project management and engineering leadership skills rather than report writing and the analysis of data. I don't remember everything we covered in the mentoring conversations, but it left me feeling enthusiastic.

“What did you learn about yourself?” At the end of every Bright Morning team meeting, we ask and answer this question. It is a simple, yet powerful, question that can be incorporated into any learning experience - formal or informal. For example, consider how powerful it might be to ask this question at the end of a tough teaching period or coaching session. Or at the end of an organized group activity. Self-knowledge is critical to our development, and too often is something that isn’t explicitly developed. We can change that! Find time with a trusted peer and take turns asking and holding space for the other to answer. If you need to reflect on your own, that works too. But resist the urge to just write or think about the answer. Talk it through. A deeper form of knowing becomes possible when you give voice to your thoughts. As humans, especially ones drawn to our line of work, we are conditioned to search for meaning. Often that can be achieved through increased understanding of self and an increased ability to do impactful work. When might you use this question next?
