From Stars and Stripes, “US Air Force celebrates 76 years of aiming high” @ https://lnkd.in/eqPMSbah Happy birthday to the U.S. Air Force, which officially celebrates 76 years of aiming high, flying, fighting and winning today. On Sept. 18, 1947, the National Security Act of 1947 established the Air Force as a separate military branch. It is the second youngest branch of the U.S. armed forces after the U.S. Space Force, which was founded in 2019 and also falls under the Department of the Air Force. However, the branch’s roots trace back to 1907, when the U.S. Army Signal Corps established an aeronautical division to take “charge of all matters pertaining to military ballooning, air machines, and all kindred subjects,” according to the Air Force Historical Research Agency. The Army’s first airplane came in 1909, and by the time World War I broke out in Europe in 1914, the 1st Aero Squadron had 12 officers, 54 enlisted men and six aircraft. Those numbers would increase throughout the war. In 1926, the Army Air Service became the Army Air Corps. By the end of World War II in 1945, the Air Corps had more than 2 million service members and over 63,000 planes, according to the Air Force fact sheet. Leading the total force includes recognizing the importance of family readiness and stability. Indeed, discussing the barriers to economic empowerment and some resources and organizations seeking to address these barriers is an excellent way to spend an afternoon. I am glad that the Department of USAF Fellows Program leadership is committed to supporting the development of Fellows's understanding of the needs and concerns of all military families. I am grateful to Mrs Sharene Brown, Mrs Jennifer Salzman (United States Space Force), and Mrs Suzie Schwartz, for sharing their knowledge and wisdom with the almost 200 Fellows and their spouses, and for engaging in such a great small group Q&A session following the main stage panel. This is Space Force Junior ROTC The Cadet Guardian Commitment #1 Join with the #CadetGuardians in the nation's ONLY Title 10, U.S. Code-mandated youth program with a #space-focus as they recite their "Cadet Guardian Commitment." It begins ... "I am a Cadet Guardian. ..." The unique "Cadet Guardian Commitment" reflects how they embrace the #GuardianValues that are the flight plan for becoming #citizens of #character while living lives of meaning and purpose. The unique title of "Cadet Guardian" is theirs alone. Just like their mentors in the nation's newest military service, these unique four values set the Cadet Guardians apart from their Air Force cadet peers. It is still one "greater Air Force family". However, having different values allows these high school students to focus on their own futures as champions for space in their communities. The nation is better for having future leaders with distinct abilities and vision that can come together for the greater good of all. The #SFJROTC enterprise is managed by the Air Force Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (AFJROTC) with the support of the United States Space Force, Space Training and Readiness Command, Space Delta 13, Detachment 2. As a Title 10 program, the Space Force Junior ROTC enterprise, like its Air Force managers, cannot endorse any other private organization without express legal permissions from national authority.

As Soldiers in the field experiment with new capabilities and ways to fight in the future, the Project Convergence Capstone 4 Table of Knowledge works to gather insights and observations from those experiments. I am grateful for the time the USAF Air Command and Staff College afforded me to think deeply about Air Force problems. Some great lessons from Operation Inherent Resolve are summarized in the linked book and I'm proud to contribute chapter 13 to the collection. https://lnkd.in/gKfnnVS6

The way the US military purchases (fair trade, organic, single sourced, dolphin safe) equipment is beyond rediculous… Time to make a dramatic change in policy that drives the process. *wild ideas: 1. Competitive free market sourcing at the unit level. 2. Put an end to the “gotta spend my whole budget, or they’ll give me less next year” mentality/policy. How else should we correct the process?

How do you pay $90,000 for a bag of bushings? -The law. Buy American laws for everything—even bushings—drives up prices. The certificates of confirmance and traceability equate to work—lots of it. - Aerospace standards. Parts that keep an aircraft flying require a large amount of testing that I don’t need to fix my lawnmower. - One size fits all quality standards. Sometimes it matters, and sometimes it doesn’t. But in our risk averse world, it is easier to make it all matter. - MANY companies that are simply unwilling to do the paperwork and go through the hassle to do work with the government. It is just too much hassle and work. That reduces the completion, and keeps the pain factor high for those who do work with the government. BL, it is not as simple as a $90,000 bag of bushings. But most of it is fixable.

One of our big initiatives this year at #theairpowerschool, USAF Air Command and Staff College, has been to create more opportunity for concept application in simulated warfighting contexts. This year we concluded our #Military Theory course with a #wargame that allowed students to apply the big ideas of military theorists from across millennia to a contemporary war scenario. Big kudos to Dr. John Minney, Dr. Mary Elizabeth Walters, and Dr. Jon Hendrickson for their work creating this opportunity. If we don’t create the space for theories and concepts to be applied and evaluated for the purpose of warfighting advantage, then we aren’t doing all we could to prepare our warfighters for the challenges ahead. Discovering the value of various theories now, in the academic environment, only increases the likelihood they can be recalled later when the situation demands, as aids to judgment.
