As the transportation industry shifts towards more sustainable fuel options like compressed natural gas (CNG) and renewable diesel (RD), the demand for renewable natural gas (RNG) production is increasing. According to Market Brief, RNG production has grown significantly over the years. In 2023, more than 150 new facilities were established to meet the rising demand from fleets aiming to enhance sustainability without compromising economic viability. Ahead of tomorrow’s third political trilogue on the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (#EPBD), we have co-signed a statement stressing the importance of renewable energy accessible through grids to create a greener building environment. In particular, it is important to ensure all types of renewable energy can contribute to the very low energy needs of Zero-Emission Buildings (#ZEBs) – which are going to be the new standard for new and renovated buildings as well as for the entire building stock by 2050 – in line with the provisions of the newly adopted Renewable Energy Directive (#REDIII). While #REDIII allows indeed Member States flexibility in achieving their renewable energy targets for buildings, including using renewable energy from the grid, the current EPBD proposals appear to favor prioritise specific energy sources and make it challenging to use grid-sourced energy, even when it's clean and green. This approach creates inconsistencies within the #Fitfor55 package and limits the choices for Member States and consumers to make their buildings more eco-friendly. It also fails to consider the diverse local realities and the varying availability of renewable resources. Therefore, we are asking to put all renewable energy options on an equal footing and ensure they can all contribute to the energy needs of ZEBs, without any discrimination. 📣The adoption of #RNG is accelerating! 🚛In 2023, 79% of U.S. on-road fuel for natural gas vehicles was renewable. Marking a 16% increase from 2022. ♻️RNG has the lowest carbon intensity of any clean fuel. In 2023 alone, it offset 6.96 million tons of CO2 equivalents. ✅We are proud to play a role in enabling the switch to RNG for fleets and distribution companies. ⬇️Check out the full report from The Transport Project and Coalition for Renewable Natural Gas:

https://lnkd.in/gM9phN4b There was common agreement about the need for government policies that provide certainty and support for a range of renewable energy options when EDL’s Head of Growth, Jason Dickfos met with other leaders recently at the Australian Financial Review’s Renewing our Energy Mix roundtable in Sydney. In other global markets, such as the UK, Europe and the United States, policy has been structured to incentivise conventional energy suppliers to take up more renewable energy. This has stimulated zero and low emissions alternatives such as the biomethane (renewable natural gas) market which is now thriving. Up to 70 per cent of gas consumed in US transport is renewable– the policies work there and they can also work here in Australia. #renewableenergy #biomethane

What are EACs? An Energy Attribute Certificate (EAC) is a document to prove renewable energy consumption. Each EAC represents that 1 MWh of renewable energy has been produced and added to the grid. Global EAC standards for renewable claims are majorly Guarantees of Origin in Europe, RECs in North America and International RECs (I-RECs) in a growing number of countries in Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America. EACs are compliant with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol and is a recognised tool for companies to report reduced greenhouse gas emissions (CDP, RE100 etc) and improve sustainability rating.
