Let’s rethink our national holidays. Some ideas: 1. Move Memorial Day (to May 30, July 3, or Nov 11) to restore its meaning. 2. Get rid of Columbus Day and Presidents Day. 3. Establish a new holiday: National Day of Service. Gift article: https://wapo.st/3UUOVBE

Consumer Columnist, Bloomberg Opinion. Covering retail, consumer and luxury. Interested in consumer trends and how they intersect with companies' financial performance
The UK will enjoy three public holidays in May. There are signs that a majority of Mondays off during the month, and an absence of bad news, are lifting the mood. In fact, as the nation prepares to celebrate the coronation of King Charles III at Westminster Abbey on May 6, the backdrop for consumers is better than the one that accompanied the late Queen Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee a year ago. Then the war in Ukraine had driven up food and petrol prices. Worries about household heating and grocery bills were starting to weigh on confidence. Recently though, there has been a "sudden flowering of optimism", according to GfK with tracks consumer sentiment. For many Britons the cost-of-living crisis has not been quite as bad as feared. Wholesale gas prices have fallen and there are signs food costs won't be rising as much over the second half of this year. Employment is strong and we are at or close to the peak of the interest rate hiking cycle. And all those public holidays don't hurt either. All in all, as Brits raise a glass to the new king, for many it will be half full. #bankholidays, #coronation: https://lnkd.in/ejwsqre7
