There are several organizations to help veterans gain employment after their service: The Honor Foundation Hiring Our Heroes Hire Heroes USA Hire Military Talent HireMilitary American Corporate Partners (ACP) DAV (Disabled American Veterans) If you're a veteran, or transitioning servicemember, complete your due diligence, check out these orgs, and follow up. The Army teaches you to "be your own best admin" bc nobody can promote your career as well as you. And if you're an employer, do the same. 5 Reasons Hiring Veterans is Good for Business Over the many years of my manufacturing career, I have often interviewed and hired many job candidates. My experience has been that if two candidates were otherwise equally qualified and one had served in the military, I would select the veteran. These individuals had a sense of duty and responsibility suited for the manufacturing industry. Many veterans have known nothing but military service, as they often enlist shortly after graduating high school. Years later, they leave the familiarity of the work routine as an armed forces member. A transition to the civilian sector can take time for them. The manufacturing industry can be a natural fit given the attention to detail, a need to be precise, teamwork, troubleshooting, and spatial thinking required to succeed in this work environment. They can also replicate their military career's success and upward mobility in manufacturing. We O'Donnell is a Managing Editor of military.com, TV host, veteran hiring speaker, and 10-year US Army and US Air Force veteran who advocates for hiring our military veterans. He shares five reasons why they should be your next hire: 1. Leadership at every level 2. Composure and creativity under pressure 3. Integrity always 4. Habitual goal orientation 5.
