We always talk about what Hesed House could do with big bet funding commitments. When we talk about ambition and innovation in social change rather than high risk, we put the focus on what we want rather than fear of failure. Innovation can’t happen in fear based, restrictive funding environments.

"Today's money should solve today's problems." There is a new perspective in philanthropy: resources can address current needs rather than being held in perpetuity. By staffing up substantially, the Clark Foundation was able to thoughtfully execute a record $1.3 billion spend-down over a decade. Rather than perpetual funding, Del Guercio, the former founder of the Clark Foundation, believed helping grantees "build muscle to become self-sustainable" is more impactful in the long term. Grantees initially struggled with the spend-down timeline but later said "it was the best thing that ever happened to them" in terms of preparing for self-sufficiency. This spend-down approach required a shift in how the foundation engaged with grantees, moving from transactional relationships to a "trust-based approach" with larger, multi-year unrestricted grants aimed at building organizational capacity and long-term sustainability. The Clark Foundation's approach can provide a model for maximizing the deployment of resources within a defined timeframe and demonstrate how planning and capacity building for grantees can enable effective philanthropic spend-downs on a large scale. #Philanthropy #CharitableGiving #GivingBack #Charity #FamilyFoundations

Philanthropic gifts should fund the actual work a non-profit is engaged in, not just support capacity and turn the staff into fundraising matching funds development officers. Big bet donations could benefit from pairing non-profis with high capacity private companies who are already proficient st addressing a certain challenge. The non-profit funds could really help scale the solutions.
