Last week, CHA voiced its support for additional state funding for The Diaper Bank of Connecticut (DBCT) to maintain and expand Diaper Connections, a first-of-its-kind partnership between Connecticut hospitals, DBCT, and CHA. 👶 According to DBCT, an increase from its current $737,000 in state funding to $2,000,000 will not only allow DBCT to continue helping the 2,200 babies in the program today, but it will also allow DBCT to help another 1,300 babies. Launched in November 2022, Diaper Connections implements screening for diaper need at hospitals and leverages existing local community assets and partnerships to organize distribution channels and distribute diapers in hospital settings, such as labor and delivery units, maternity and pediatric clinics, emergency departments, and primary care sites. This was me in 2016 as a first time mum. My post term, 12 day overdue baby was born and taken straight to the NICU without me even being able to lay eyes on him or hold him following a failed induction and an emergency c section. By the end of that week, we were being told to essentially give up and let him go. In every sense of the word, my baby boy looked healthy and was described as a 'strapping' and sturdy looking 9 pound plus newborn. Doctors couldn't understand why he was so severely ill. I had had a healthy pregnancy and been well throughout, without any concerns. But I had the answers they didn't. Had I been listened to on the induction ward by the staff when I was in agony all night, and had NICE guidance been followed, my baby would not have been born in the condition that he was. My husband and I fought for him. We refused to 'pull the plug'. We had him transferred to another hospital 2 hours away and miraculously he turned a corner, and slowly over the course of a month in NICU, he came home. My baby came home healthy, and has been thriving since. He is our constant reminder that hope never dies and miracles are possible. My story had a happy ending. So many others do not. However, I emerged from this experience with PTSD and anxiety symptoms which went un detected because I wasn't scoring highly on a screening measure of depression. As a clinical psychologist, I was able to slowly use my own skills on myself and come out the other side. But this won't be the case for most. Maternity care and post maternity support must be improved within the NHS. We need to trust that pregnant women know their own bodies- if they say something is not right, it probably isn't. We need more psychological support post birth, and we need this support from experts who are trained to deliver psychological support. #nhs #perinatalcare #clinicalpsychology #psychologist #maternitycare

During Black Maternal Health Week, we will share how we support and ensure equitable care to black birthing parents through our Advocacy and more specifically our Policy Team. Family Connects presents a comprehensive approach to addressing a preventable crisis that disproportionally impacts black birthing parents. Since 2018, the ACOG has advocated for postpartum consultations within three weeks of giving birth. Yet, many mothers in the U.S. navigate the first 12 weeks post-delivery on their own, often delaying medical visits until 4-6 weeks postpartum. Alarmingly, about 40% of new moms never have a postpartum medical visit, with even fewer among those facing healthcare access issues. The ACOG suggests nurse home visits as a potential alternative for the initial postpartum visit, referencing the Family Connects model. The Family Connects model provides universal and equitable quality care and resources to newborns and their families in diverse communities across the United States. Founded by BMMA, Black Maternal Health Week is a week of awareness, activism, and community-building aimed at amplifying the voices of Black Mamas and centering the values and traditions of the reproductive and birth justice movements. BMHW is held annually in April during National Minority Health Month. #BMHW24 is, above all, a week dedicated to educating and advocating for Black Mamas. Through a series of digital events and community engagement, BMHW uplifts Black womenled organizations to focus on the root causes of poor maternal health outcomes, while engaging Black voices to lead immediate conversations around community-driven policies and programs. I'm often asked why I do so much work around Black Maternal Health as a Neonatologist and a Pediatric Palliative Care Provider...the question makes me smile because it gives me an opportunity to remind other that babies don't arrive here alone. They come from mothers and birthing people who come from families who come from communities all of which are impacted by adverse birth outcomes. When I meet a family in the hospital impacted by an adverse birth outcome I immediately immersed in their story..what could we have done differently and how can we make their next experience better. Many times there is nothing that could have been done differently, but friends more often than not, especially for BIPOC families there is quite a bit that could have been done differently. The Ockenden review (2022) provided a series of immediate and essential actions to improve care and maternity services across England. Despite a 20% decrease in stillbirth and neonatal deaths in England between 2010 and 2021, other indicators of quality have declined in recent years and we know outcomes for black and Asian women and those from more deprived areas in the UK, are significantly worse than for others. Action Against Hunger advocates Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) method for its multifaceted benefits. KMC,an impactful method harnesses the nurturing bond between mother and baby. KMC in most cases is given by mothers; but fathers and caregivers in the family are also encouraged to give Kangaroo Care to enhance the emotional connect with the baby through skin-to-skin contact. KMC is an effective way to meet baby’s needs for warmth, breasfeeding, protection from infection, stimulation, safety and love. It is an effective solution for improving care and outcome for low-birth-weight babies. It fosters an environment conducive to healthy growth and development. Sadly, we are seeing more and more of this. Just last month the hospital a few minutes from where I lived in Pennsylvania ended their childbirth services. The article suggests several ways payers and providers can help improve Maternal Health Outcomes including the use of solutions like ours at AMC Health. Maternal care is a high stakes issue in relation to health equity. According to the March of Dimes, over 2.2 million women and girls ages 15-44 live in maternity care deserts. These deserts are counties with a lack of maternity care resources, such as hospitals, birth centers, obstetric care, and obstetric providers. This leaves almost 150,000 babies affected by the lack of healthcare resources.
