As it's the end of my first week with 7Factor Software, I just wanted to give a brief update on how it's been and some initial takeaways. General thoughts: -Everyone at the company has been so kind, welcoming, and encouraging. Honestly couldn't have asked for a better environment for real professional growth. -My second PR was just merged this afternoon, which officially closes out my first ticket! It's super exciting watching my work merged into a real live product. Technical thoughts: -I've always recognized the importance of testing in a production environment, but the sheer amount of mocking going on has been eye-opening! -I have a great appreciation for the level of abstraction that exists to make the dev experience more enjoyable. Digging into those levels when debugging or understanding how something is implemented has definitely given me a lot of insight into thinking at that level of abstraction. I'm really enjoying myself and looking forward to working more with everyone! Be back next week!

It's easier for people to share ZERO with you than to share ONE with you. 🚨 My advice to all software engineers, developers and creators is that: Unless explicitly hired and paid to work on a project(s), when collaborating on unpaid project(s) with potential commercial value, be sure to have a formal agreement to secure your interest.

I was onboarding a new business partner last week on video chat, when her 4 year old came running in to exclaim with delight, “The brown truck you told me to look for is here!” The UPS driver had in fact arrived, delivering her wine.   I can't tell you how much I WISHED I would have known about ways to engage my brain and learn how to still make money during the little years, when I was at home with my kids. My career was on pause, and all I knew were two paths - career girl or SAHM. I had NO IDEA about a hybrid role that would not only teach me actual marketing skills that can apply to literally any modern day role (*social media era enters the chat*) but also allowed me to still be PRESENT with my kids in the long, but fleeting little years. There is no better business than the wine business. No question. I'm dropping a link in the comments if a business opportunity like that sounds like it would suit your current job requirements, and/or someone you might know. I'm 4 years in, and help women just like this learn to build income from their phones, every single month. It's 2024 - just know, you have WAY more options than just the two traditional paths they've sold you on. ;)

A practice I've seen at most jobs I've been at that I really like is a focus on balancing tactical (short-term) work and strategic (long-term) work. Yes, you constantly have to smash the latest and hottest thing to hit your to-do list. That's always going to take precedence. However, if you don't ever take the time to work on strategic efforts, you're missing out on tons of value. Long term software development efforts from full re-writes of old projects to new skunkworks efforts are *incredibly important.* In general, I see an 80/20 split at most places: 80% of your team's time focused on the tasks right in front of your nose, 20% focused on high-impact strategic projects.

As a software company CEO, you have many challenges and must spend your time directing the company on the right glide path to success. I find that spending some of my time on the phone as a tech support specialist to be the most enlightening and meaningful. Improving your production product and not enhancing the application constantly can even result in increased sales. Your user base is a great source for application improvement. Nothing like having your butt handed to you by a Private or Airman First Class. Some of our best features come from this person-to-person interaction that fails to translate through tech support software data statistics. Technical Support, Time Well Spent! It should be a requirement for everyone on your team regardless of the position. Be humble or be humbled. Happy Thanksgiving.
