Charles Hall article published this morning in City AM: A solution to Britain’s investment doldrums is right under the noses of politicians. "Sadly, the honest truth is that both of our major political parties had little or nothing to say to the Square Mile. In conference season politicians are looking for applause in the hall and fighting for the floating voters at home. That means there is little incentive to appeal to financial services, particularly when financial times are tight and promises aren’t cheap. But at the same time, both the red and blue teams set out problems to which the answer is, at least in part, restoring a thriving equity sector in London and turning around the depressing trend of de-equitisation in recent years." https://lnkd.in/e2f8W3pt #equitymarket #investmentbank #finanancialservices

Morning all. Following the earlier-than-usual posting of our Crescendo yesterday (the first part of our Investment Trust series discussing why investment trusts discounts are so wide and why this matters), I was alerted to a speech made by Sharon Bowles (Baroness Bowles) in the House of Lords yesterday late afternoon. You can read the text of the speech in Hansard in the link below. It is fantastic that the critical issue of investment trust cost disclosures (and the devastating impact this is having not just on widening discounts but also on the channeling (or not!) of private capital to fund crucial infrastructure in the UK) is being addressed in the House of Lords. Ultimately, the solution is incredibly simple! Funds (and private client portfolios) should not have to include investment trust “costs” (inverted commas used as they are simply not cash costs to the underlying investor) in portfolio OCFs - as we have argued repeatedly. This really is the butterfly that flapped it’s wings with terrible consequences. I am grateful to Baroness Bowles for her work!!! At Cornerstone Place, we’re working every day to help build an economy that delivers more for people and planet – so we’ve joined forces with dozens of organisations in the Future Economy Alliance to push this up the political agenda. Today we’ve been in Parliament to launch a new report on the national policy change needed to better support our growing movement and create a stronger, fairer, greener economy. You can read all the details in our ‘Business Plan for Britain’ on the Future Economy Alliance website. https://lnkd.in/ekyGQVQx We’re calling on the next UK Government to recognise the importance of working for a purpose beyond profit and make this mission-led approach the national norm. An estimated four million of us work in social enterprises and other mission-led organisations; we’re living proof that business can be a force for good, and we need those in power to unleash our full potential. It was heartening to see influential people taking an interest in our sector at the House of Lords this morning – including cross-party MPs, national journalists and economic think-tanks – but publishing this report is just the start. We’re determined to make this a priority for the General Election and beyond. This month we’re also crowdfunding to create a unique creative campaign that will cut through the political noise with our bold message of change and hope. Will you help us? Arvinda Gohil OBE, chair of the Future Economy Alliance, said: “Millions of us across the UK work in mission-led organisations that show the way to a stronger, fairer, greener economy. We just need those in power to unleash the full potential of our movement, so that this way of working becomes the national norm. With government and business working in partnership, we can build an economy where all of society profits.” Richard Kennedy, co-founder of Cornerstone Place, said: “This cross-sector partnership is an ambitious project to make the voice of mission-led organisations heard in the halls of Westminster. It’s time for a new approach to drive a more inclusive and impactful economy to build resilience rather than dependency. We urge the next Government to join us around the table to kickstart bold reform which will deliver for generations to come.” To build an economy that really works for our society, we need support from across that society. Please get involved with our campaign – donate if you can (https://lnkd.in/exhvG6iM), use the tools on the Alliance website to share it, and sign up to find out about events or actions in future.

Barbell Investment strategy couldn't have been better explained than by the Maxwell-Cummins partnership! Glen Maxwell played like T20 while Pat Cummins played it like Test. Both played different but complementary roles to lead their team to victory. Believe it or not, we have something very similar existing in the world of investing. We call it Barbell Strategy! It implies allocating: • a large part of one’s portfolio to low-risk assets • a small portion to high-risk assets • none to medium-risk assets This is the anti-fragile way of investing, as supported by Nassim Nicholas Taleb. An anti-fragile portfolio is one that not only survives the "crisis" but actually profits from it! By stockpiling low-risk assets like cash/fixed income securities, our portfolio survives no matter what happens, because we assume we can't accurately measure risk and could lose everything we invest. And allocate a small part of your portfolio to aggressive, high-risk trades. These trades have limited potential losses because of small investment, but if they succeed, it can maximize profits. Therefore helping one's portfolio both survive and thrive during the worst of times. Australia faced the worst of times in the match. Pat Cummins was the low-risk asset who made sure they survived, not losing his wicket. While Glen Maxwell took those high-risk shots maximizing their chances of winning. Result? Achieving the unbelievable! #sharemarket #investing #india #barbell #investment #stockmarket
