When it comes to seeking mental health services, black children and teens are more likely to receive it in schools than in outpatient programs. The main problem however is that schools in predominately black neighborhoods are less likely to have mental health services available in comparison to schools in predominately white neighborhoods. Here at Access Psychology Foundation, we are committed to increasing equitable access to mental health treatment and training for people of color and underserved communities. Learn more about how we are closing the gaps in access to mental health care by visiting us online at www.access-psychology.org/. #accesspsychologyfoundation #mentalhealth #mentalhealthsupport #mentalhealthtreatment #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthmatters #youthmentalhealth #mentalhealthforall

A lot of people don’t realize the impact of race-related stress on racial and ethnic communities. Or they aren’t thinking about some of the obstacles for people to access quality health services, including mental health treatment. Because of cultural norms. A lot of people learn to keep their problems to themselves, or not to share issues in the family with other people. In some communities, there’s a stigma that if you have a mental health issue, you’re ‘crazy.’ That’s something that we often hear, and, unfortunately, that’s something that has carried over through generations. National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month is observed each July to bring awareness to the unique struggles that racial and ethnic minority communities face regarding mental illness in the United States. We need to continue to advocate for culturally competent educators/ providers and healthcare systems to purposefully care for students/ patients to find ways to meet their social, cultural and linguistic needs. #foodforthought #mentalhealth #minoritymentalhealthmonth

Champion of Psychologically Safe Learning Environments | Founder/CEO, Herrera Psychology | Co-Founder, HumanizEDU | Youth Mental Health Advocate
Here’s my local struggle… I’ve had more than one parent recently tell me that when they asked someone at their child’s school for a recommendation within our community to address their child’s mental health struggles, the school personnel did not have any suggestions. *If you work with children, you must have a network of suggestions for organizations who support youth mental health. *Educate yourself on the local providers. *Youth mental health is a collective responsibility. Navigating the behavioral/mental health system is so challenging, and when a parent finally asks another adult for a recommendation or guidance, the problem is probably pretty big. Please know your community health organizations, refer parents to NAMI, tell them to ask their child’s pediatrician, let them know that you will find out and get back to them. The following Florida-based private psychology practices provide youth mental health support (individual therapy, group therapy, and parent coaching): Herrera Psychology https://lnkd.in/d2q83pUJ https://lnkd.in/eSf-Qi9i www.childtherapysrq.com www.funpsy.com The following are Sarasota County nonprofit organizations who specialize in children and youth mental health: JFCS of the Suncoast SAMARITAN COUNSELING SERVICES OF THE GULF COAST INC Lightshare Behavioral Wellness & Recovery (First Step) I also know that these same businesses/organizations will provide other resources and referrals if they are not a good fit for the family. So, even if you remembered one organization you could provide the starting point for a parent who is struggling to find support for their child. If you are an educator or work in education and have other suggestions for sharing resources with families, I am open to ideas on how to help parents navigate the mental health system.

Consultant Clinical Psychologist I Lead for Psychological Professionals I Parent-Infant Psychotherapist I Module Lead KCL I Founder
So important for neonatal staff to be aware of this resource. Neonatal parents may struggle with how they feel about their baby. These 3 important questions can make all the difference to open up a conversation and help support parent-infant relationships on the neonatal unit. What 3 words or phrases would you use to describe your relationship with your baby? What brings you the most joy in the relationship with your baby? What is your biggest fear about your relationship with your baby? Start the conversation. #parentinfantrelationships #neonatalpsychology #parenting #neonatal
We were delighted to be involved in helping to shape this vital new resource from Department of Health and Social Care https://lnkd.in/etwvdp_p The guidelines are designed to help practitioners to identify early difficulties in parent-infant relationships and to support them in referring families onto specialised parent-infant relationship teams and services where appropriate. As well asking caregivers their views, the new prompts also encourage practitioners to consider what babies are communicating through observation. The baby's voice is such a crucial part of understanding parent-infant relationships & more about the development of babies. This new set of guidelines, and especially the consideration of the baby's voice, resonates well with our recently announced theme for Infant Mental Health Awareness Week (10th - 16th June) where we're asking politicians to #Speakupforbabies Find out more about IMHAW here 👉 bit.ly/42nUI63 #IMHAW2024
