With an estimated 64 species deemed invasive due to the immense harm they cause, these waters are under significant threat. 

 Now, energies are focused on improving the early detection of species to prevent their establishment and spread, as well as controlling populations of established harmful invasives.

Crazy fun fact: Lampreys are a delicacy here in Portugal and are actually under threat because of dams. Someone had the genius idea to catch them in the Great Lakes and sell them in Portugal. Could increasing native species through captive breeding and release programs aid in reducing or stalling invasive populations? Or incentivizing the capture or removal of invasive plant and animal populations? Similarly to programs that were developed to reduce predator species in the wild; the programs caused significant damage to these native populations, but could be beneficial when directed at invasive species.
