I cannot agree more. Personality hires have a true role in a department. But only if they bring humor and good joy. Many organizations have stopped allowing their employees to have fun while at work. Within reason of course. I’ll never understand why corporate leaders don’t understand the importance of having a joyful work place especially for those in high risk emotional areas like Healthcare. Something to consider at your next interview or when doing a ln annual review.

Getting the first turn of the crank done is one of the most important things you can do when tackling something new. No matter how much we plan, there is nothing more telling than executing your plan the first time. As officers in the military are taught, "no plan survives first contact with the enemy." This applies equally well to business. This week, I had the fortunate opportunity to turn the crank on about 12 different things, ranging from handling patient paperwork to processing credit cards. In all these cases, I realized that I had an idea or plan of how things would go, but it wasn't until we operated through a process at least once, did I fully understand what I didn't know. Funding and starting up a Medical Clinic has put that phrase 'you don't know what you don't know' front and center for me this week. Having turned the crank at least once now on so many disparate efforts, I'm realizing the enormity of what I really didn't know just 5 short days ago. But that is okay, as the second turn of the crank for each of these shrank that volume of unawareness. So whether you're building a strategic plan or creating a new hiring process, know that you'll learn, adjust, and improve more by turning the crank than spending extra time up front trying to create the perfect process.
