The cost of our collective disregard for the broken judicial system we as a nation have created is generational and for many now a legacy not of their own choosing. This is NOT OK and there will be a reckoning. More staggering than the generations of influence and family involvement lost is the potential taken from the children, wives, husbands, families, communities, our nation. Our judicial system is one of the swift plea deal with zero accountability of the repercussions. As a Deputy, I was required to read Miranda Rights during the arrest of a suspected violator of the law. However, plea deals are often pursued without any education to the suspected violator of what taking that plea means and what it may cost them in the long run. This process may save resources when dealing with guilty parties and provide prosecutors with much needed tools. However, when a scared teen, young adult, or any other ignorant member or community is faced with a quick “solution” for a minor offence or the perception of a means to get rid of situation of wrong place wrong time, understanding the cost of taking a plea is vital. Will they be able to get a job? Apply for affordable housing? Get scholarships? Join the military? Vote? Remember, being arrested, taken to jail, then pleading out does NOT equal #guilt or #justice! There are different numbers depending on what you read though all the numbers I have read are north of #95% of guilty verdicts in our judicial system are #plea deals. #Innocent until proven guilty has been completely lost in this process.
