In a year full of elections, it's clear you shouldn't be going to AI for advice. A new report by Proof News and The iAS shows that leading AI models often give inaccurate information when asked about elections in the U.S. The study found that Anthropic’s Claude, Google’s Gemini, OpenAI’s GPT-4, Meta’s Llama 2, and Mistral’s Mixtral struggled with accuracy, with about half of their responses being rated as inaccurate by the expert testers. Despite OpenAI's pledge to promote information integrity and mitigate misinformation, none of the GPT-4 responses referred users to the legitimate source CanIVote.org, and some responses misrepresented voting processes. Similarly, Google and Anthropic had announced measures to direct users to reliable sources for election information, but the study's findings suggest these measures were not effectively implemented in the tested responses. https://lnkd.in/emMX2bFK

With 64+ elections this year, AI text models need to be prepared - providing accurate and useful information to users. However, thanks to this comprehensive analysis by Julia Angwin, Alondra Nelson and Rina Palta, it's clear that there are still several critical issues regarding the performance and reliability, namely: 1. Significant inaccuracies in their responses to questions about election-related topics (eg: providing outdated or incorrect information about voting processes) 2. Incomplete responses lacked crucial information that could potentially disenfranchise voters or lead to confusion, and misleading or discouraging information that could deter people from participating in the voting process. 3. Making assumptions about the user's demographics or by presenting information in a manner that could be divisive or misleading. The findings underscore the importance of continued efforts to improve the accuracy, completeness, and impartiality of AI models, especially when they are used to provide information on critical topics such as elections. In the meantime, users should be encouraged to primarily use trusted sources such as local election websites for obtaining reliable information about elections. https://lnkd.in/emMX2bFK

AI in the 2024 General Election: Game-Changer or Threat? 🗳️ The influence of artificial intelligence on this year's General Election is unprecedented – and it's just the beginning! From AI-powered candidates engaging with voters to the alarming rise of deepfakes and AI-generated misinformation, AI's footprint is both promising and perilous. One candidate is using an AI representative to answer constituents’ questions, and the BBC has reported on fake AI generated content on TikTok and deepfakes on X. The true scale of AI’s impact on the General Election will only be determined in the weeks and months after the Election. I wrote for Computer Weekly about the dual-edged sword of AI in elections! 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gkmjHkXR Open Data Institute #AIElections #2024GeneralElection #AIandDemocracy #VoterEngagement #TechInPolitics

While heralding new efficiencies in public services and administrative tasks, the advancement of #AI technologies also brings forth unprecedented challenges in the realm of elections. The potential for artificial intelligence (AI) to be misused in electoral processes has emerged as a pressing concern for AI companies like #OpenAI. In response to this, Open AI is actively developing strategies to address these challenges. The possibility of AI tools being used to create misleading #deepfakes, orchestrate influence operations or develop #chatbot impersonations of political figures is a significant threat to the integrity of democratic systems. Democracy faces an unprecedented threat from artificial intelligence in this digital age. Despite AI's potential to solve complex problems, it is now being weaponized to manipulate elections and undermine democratic institutions. This dark world of AI-driven election interference involves bad actors exploiting technology to spread disinformation, sow discord, and manipulate public opinion. The propagation of fake news is a primary tactic, with AI algorithms amplifying content that resonates with specific audiences, distorting perceptions and swaying voter opinions at an alarming pace. This insidious use of AI raises profound concerns about the integrity of elections and the foundations of democratic societies. The Future of AI in U.S. Elections: Beyond Traditional Campaign Methods The role of AI in election campaigns is undeniable. AI has always been a significant player in U.S. elections, but with the recent leaps in AI technology, especially the enhanced ability of NLP models dealing with text data in the form of LLMs, I believe we're on the brink of a new era for election campaigns. How amazing to see these models becoming better and better at generating content and deep insights like never before. As we look ahead to the upcoming elections, it's fascinating to think about how candidates might use AI beyond the traditional methods of running ads, sending cold emails and texts. What are your thoughts on the role of AI in future elections? How do you think it will change the way campaigns are run? #AI #Election2024 #LLMs #Analytics #FutureOfElections

Luminate is pleased to support POLITICO Europe’s expanded coverage of AI and elections through the newly launched “Bots and Ballots” series! In this series, you’ll read about AI’s impact on disinformation during the 2024 global election cycle, in Europe, and around the world. The first installment includes three articles, including a data story on people's attitude to AI and democracy worldwide. While data reveals a general consensus on the threat of disinformation, people in non-Western regions often have better understanding — and greater concern — about AI and its civic impacts: https://lnkd.in/eJvgKQaP Over the coming months, we’ll continues to share stories from “Bots and Ballots” to shed light on the impact of AI on democracy and society.

Busily obsessed with search engines, databases, and online information collections since 1996. You don't need AI for great search. The NSA thinks I'm clever.
I like to make it simple: Non-Sketchy News Search will let you find news sources via Wikipedia before searching them on Google News. Marion's Monocle will find FCC-licensed TV stations by state before searching their Web sites on Google News. In one case the sourcing is transparent, in the other it is transparent and authoritative. And of course there's Street Scoop and School Scoop, which use local street and school names to source *really* local news. All free, all free of advertising. https://searchtweaks.com/
As we face elections, deepfakes, and a surge of AI-generated content online, interventions to help people differentiate between synthetic and real content are crucial. A recent Mozilla report highlights that traditional strategies, such as watermarking and labeling, are encountering obstacles. The researchers propose alternative recommendations for consideration, emphasizing the ongoing impact of AI on our daily lives. https://lnkd.in/gSRt3Y56
