☂ Hopes of some sunshine in the #UK were dashed this July as unseasonable weather put the dampeners on sales of our usual summer favourites. It was a better month for Barbie than barbecues as the rain put a spanner in the works for many consumers’ outdoor plans – a stark comparison to last year when we experienced the hottest day on record. 📉 Volume sales of ice creams were down by 30%, while soft drinks sales were nearly a fifth lower than 12 months ago. On the other hand, the amount of soup bought has gone up by 16% year on year, while roasting joints have grown by 5%. #wednesdaypost Industry researcher Kantar predicts that December will see a record-breaking milestone, with take-home grocery sales exceeding £13 billion for the first time. During the four-week period ending on November 26, 2023, sales increased by 6.3% and reached a total of £11.7 billion. During the festive time, grocers anticipate a significant increase in sales, as consumers are projected to purchase approximately 10% more items compared to a usual month. The rate of inflation has further decreased, reaching 9.1% in November. Retailers are competing fiercely to provide consumers with value during this crucial trading month and are making efforts to maintain low prices. The price of a Christmas meal for four has experienced a modest increase of 1.3% this year, which is far lower than the general inflation rate. Expenditure on promotions reached a peak of 28.4% in the most recent four-week period, marking the highest level in more than two years. #marketshare #kantar #Sainsburys #tesco #lidl #aldi #asda #morrisons #november2023 #christmas #sales #market #grocers #consumer #retailers #consumerbehaviour #veldmerrie #keepgrowing https://lnkd.in/d-ip7uX7

📉 #UK grocery price inflation fell to 6.7% in December, its lowest level since April 2022, but many consumers are still feeling the pinch. The rate of #inflation is coming down at the fastest pace we have ever recorded, but consumers are still facing pretty hefty pressures on their budgets. #Retailers were clearly working hard during the festive period to offer best value and win over #shoppers, and #promotions were central to their strategy. 🛒 🎅🏼 Nearly one third of all spend in the four weeks to #Christmas Eve was made on items with some kind of offer, the highest level since December 2020 and £823 million more than last year. 🥐 The rate at which food prices are rising has fallen below 10% for the first time in more than a year, according to new data. Research firm Kantar says prices across supermarkets were 9.7% higher in the four weeks to the end of October, compared to a year before. It is the slowest rise since last July. An easing in food prices has emerged as shops prepare for a "fight for shoppers' Christmas spend", Kantar said. Rising food prices have been a major driver behind the higher cost of living in the UK. It has meant that supermarkets have had to battle it out for customer visits and traditional spending habits are being "thrown out of the window", Kantar said, as many have started shopping around or visiting discount retailers in order to save money. Although lower food price inflation might ease some of the extra pressure households have been under, it does not necessarily mean that goods will be cheaper - just that prices are not rising as fast. https://lnkd.in/d65zbHb4

📉 #British grocery price #inflation fell slightly to 6.8% in January, down from 6.9% in December 2023, according to our latest data. This softer decline compares with a 2.2 percentage point decrease seen between November and December 2023. 🛒 Items bought on #offer accounted for 27% of all grocery spending in January versus 32% last month. However, there’s still plenty of opportunities for consumers to make #savings. The overall trend in offers is up versus this time last year, and nearly £500 million more was spent on offers this January than in the same month in 2023. 🍽️ With inflation remaining stubbornly high, Britons are changing their behaviour to better manage their costs. There’s evidence to suggest that people are opting for more homemade meals to keep budgets in line. 86 million more #lunchboxes were made last year, for example. 👉🏼 Read the full article here: https://ow.ly/NslW50QvKXG 🎧 Listen now here: https://ow.ly/RBI250QoIhy #Kantar #GroceryMarketShare

📉 Grocery inflation stands at 2.6% in the 12 weeks to 12 May 2024, down 13.3 percentage points compared to the same period last year. Once again, we see grocery inflation fall for the thirteenth month in a row – now sitting at the lowest level we have seen since March 2022. Retailers are also promoting their own label ranges to get shoppers through the door. Sales of own label are performing well and growing ahead of the total market at 5.7% year-on-year, with shoppers spending an additional €86m year-on-year. Irish consumers celebrated by dusting off their barbeques at the first opportunity.
