Today we celebrate the observance of Juneteenth, a day that marks a pivotal moment in American history. On this day, June 19, 1865, Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, arrived in Galveston, Texas, and declared the end of the Civil War and the abolition of slavery. Despite the Emancipation Proclamation issued on January 1st, 1863, many areas of the South still actively held slaves and it wasn’t until the official defeat of Robert E. Lee that many were informed of their new rights. Two and a half years later they were finally freed. The historical significance of Juneteenth lies in its symbolization of freedom and the end of slavery in the United States. It serves as a reminder of the long and arduous struggle for civil rights and the ongoing pursuit of racial equality and was only recently established as a national holiday by President Biden in 2021. We hope you take this day to celebrate and remember and to grow in your journey of cultural awareness and understanding. Today is Juneteenth - America's second Independence Day. The historical legacy of Juneteenth shows the value of never giving up hope in uncertain times. Juneteenth is a day that commemorates when slavery finally ended in the United States, 2½ years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. President Joe Biden made the once-regional southern holiday a federal holiday in 2021. Gov. Ron DeSantis issued a resolution in 2020 calling upon Floridians to honor Juneteenth. “Juneteenth is an important opportunity to honor the principles of the Declaration of Independence and celebrate the achievements and contributions African Americans have made, and continue to make, in Florida and across our Nation," the resolution read. Today, 19 June, is #Juneteenth – a day to commemorate the ending of slavery in the United States. Officially recognized as “Juneteenth National Independence Day” as a federal holiday since 2021, and colloquially known as “Jubilee Day” and “Freedom Day.” It’s an important reminder for all of us that slavery did not end with the Emancipation Proclamation on 1 January 1863, but rather more than two years later, with the news reaching Black Americans in Galveston, Texas on June Nineteenth 1865 – hence, “Juneteenth.” 🌎 This day also reminds us that the long march and hard-fought struggles for social and environmental justice continue and is a call to action to redouble our efforts for creating a more just, equitable and sustainable future. ⚖️🌿 As North America's leaders affirmed last year at the North American Leaders Summit: “Our people share bonds of family and friendship and value – above all else – freedom, justice, human rights, equality, and democracy. This is the North American DNA.” Although the day is a US federal holiday, Juneteenth is also celebrated in Mexico and Canada. Every year, the Mascogos, descendants of Black Seminoles who escaped from slavery in 1852 and settled in Coahuila, Mexico, celebrate Juneteenth. https://lnkd.in/gZEFbK4W). Juneteenth particularly resonates in Canada because of the legacy of the “Underground Railroad,” which saw tens of thousands of enslaved African Americans cross into Canada to find freedom. The Underground Railroad remains an important national historic event in Canada, recognized by the Government of Canada. https://lnkd.in/gE_bvrZC Next week, our 3-day Council Session and JPAC Public Forum will focus on “Strengthening Environmental Justice through Community Empowerment” and create space for critical conversations on topics like anti-racism, intersectionality and equity as we all work to address historical wrongs. 👉 https://lnkd.in/gAHEDhDV Learn more about our work on #EnvironmentalJustice: 👉https://lnkd.in/gxA8Q8Mq

https://lnkd.in/ek7FwdWq As a first-generation immigrant and refugee escaping oppression, the United States has always been my adopted home. While the nation undeniably faces its share of challenges and imperfections, its greatness isn't defined by a fleeting moment in history. Instead, it shines through a resilient spirit that embraces critical self-reflection and the relentless pursuit of improvement. This journey towards progress might be complex and non-linear, but it remains ever forward-moving. Reflecting on Juneteenth, we are reminded that this is a holiday we should all be proud of and celebrate as Americans. It calls us to be agents of change, to take proactive steps, and to never settle for the status quo. There's always more work to be done, and Juneteenth inspires us to continue striving for a better, more just future.
