Spending time in nature or engaging in calming activities like meditation, knitting or gardening can benefit mental and physical health by rejuvenating our cells. Research led by UCSF’s Alexandra Daisy Crosswell, PhD and Elissa Epel connects activities like painting or yoga to changes in the nervous system and cell health, leading to a restorative state that promotes healthy aging. Thank you for caring for our youngest patients!
Nurse Roxana Gonzalez spends her nights caring for babies in our Oakland NICU. She became a nurse after interning with Community Health and Adolescent Mentoring Program for Success (CHAMPS), a three-year internship program that prepares Oakland teens of color for health care careers, helping to diversify the field and contribute to culturally competent care. Gonzalez herself was a preemie, born shortly after her mother moved from Mexico. She says few nurses at that time spoke Spanish, and the language gap was hard on her mother, who didn't understand why she couldn't take her baby home from the hospital. It's important to Gonzalez, who is fluent in Spanish, that other parents don't experience the same confusion. "Parents know they can call us at any time, and we'll be there to answer in their language while providing their child with the best care," she says. "When I started, I cared for a baby born at 26 weeks. She weighed less than a kilo, but she was a fighter. I would talk to her in Spanish because her mom talked to her in Spanish, and I think Mom and Dad really appreciated that," she says. How are tech advances helping to keep us healthier? "Before, you were at the mercy of what your provider told you," UCSF School of Nursing's Linda Park says. "You’d take a prescription and do your best. But digital health puts so much power in patients’ hands. The benefit really happens when people want to implement healthy behaviors, whether physical activity, medication adherence, or something else." https://ucsfh.org/3XSL23p

We're proud of the award-winning equitable care we provide to our LGBTQ+ patients, and excited to highlight the 🌈 Rainbow Inflammatory Bowel Disease Clinic during Pride! Located at our Mount Zion Hospital, it's the first dedicated IBD clinic for LGBTQ+ folks on the West Coast. Led by Dr. Justin Field, the clinic provides a safe haven and raises awareness within the LGBTQ+ community about the critical importance of IBD screenings. IBD stands for #InflammatoryBowelDisease, which includes conditions like Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis and affects many aspects of daily life. The clinic offers a supportive environment where LGBTQ+ individuals with IBD can feel comfortable and respected while discussing their health needs, and can receive affirming care.
