I came across some interesting statistics from a recent survey by Intelligent.com, and it got me thinking about our job market here in Malaysia. During job interviews, employers say recent college graduates: - Struggle with eye contact (53%) - Ask for unreasonable compensation (50%) - Dress inappropriately (47%) - Use inappropriate language (27%) - Refuse to turn on their camera during virtual interviews (21%) - Bring a parent to their interview (19%) These numbers are quite telling. As we prepare our graduates for the workforce, are we doing enough to equip them with the necessary soft skills and professional etiquette? Eye contact, appropriate language, and interview attire seem basic, yet they’re areas where many are falling short. In Malaysia, we often emphasize academic excellence, but perhaps it's time to also focus more on interpersonal skills and professional behavior. How do we strike a balance between technical skills and soft skills in our education system? Navigating the job market can be a daunting voyage, especially for fresh graduates who often find themselves adrift in a sea of uncertainty. The key to anchoring a dream job lies in mastering the art of resume crafting and acing interviews. One thing that makes it difficult for fresh graduates to get a job is the limitations and lack of access to information about career development. Last night, me and my friends discussed many things related to the world of work with Mr. Raka Eka Pramudito a Chairman of The Board at Yayasan Pita Kuning Anak Indonesia. We were taught about how to compile content that should be included in a resume or CV. Not only that, he said that he will give us tips and tricks to answer questions during job interviews in the next discussion. What an insightfull night! A message for fresh graduate. By identifying your career goals, building your work experience, tailoring your job applications, preparing for job interviews, and staying positive and persistent, you can increase your chances of finding a job that aligns with your aspirations and sets you on a path to success.

Questions arising in forums : Interviews are getting harder ,and selection rate is less than 1% with MAANGMT. Answer:Interviews are not getting hard. We are making it hard on ourselves for job & role seeking position. Everyone feels entitled for the offer based on hype. Its not good to expose weakness with end stranger. Even interviewers are missing end experience as they want to enjoy your company in process of onboarding. Its a competitive world ,and joining on-board will always have question whether to include experience person into team. There are young managers who might try to place ,and alignment process may not go well. Just be thankful for opportunity, team and move onto another one. Nothing to feel bad or feel discouraged. Folks will pretend to penalize based on your experience & knowledge gathering but it may be not useful to the team. If you don't feel good with one can stop the interview process & walk-over.

I always hated the pretending in Job Interviews. Pretending to give a sh*t about uninspiring industries. Pretending to care about a company I discovered 30 mins ago through a job ad. And for a typically bad value British industry benchmark salary. But do you know what made this worse? I felt this way with 95% of the positions available. Virtually nothing interested me. Yet for a solid 18 months, I’d waste energy scraping around looking for that “one dream job”. People would say, “you’re being too picky, you need to compromise”. Awful advice. Heres why: The job market simply does not cater for everyone. It caters for people who 1) Have clearly defined paths e.g doctor 2) Don’t have clear paths but are fine with their purpose being assigned by their boss. 3) Those who don’t want to be assigned a path but haven’t yet discovered how to escape. Three is the fishing net I found myself caught in for two years. So here’s the escape plan: Recognise it isn’t your fault that the job market sucks, and your unique skillset will thrive outside it. BUT: no one is coming to save you. You have to take ownership. Instead of internalising your disillusion, reverse + harness it as your opportunity. Build a brand around your ambition to live a better life. Instead of wasting your time trawling through job boards. Build an aligned online business instead. Did you know that most companies will have similar recruitment cycle every year? This is especially for mass recruitment, not for niche or ad-hoc hiring. Below is an example of the recruitment timeline: 🔷January - February: Planning for manpower requirement by respective hiring department. 🔷March - May: Sourcing, job advertisement & career fair managed by the recruitment team. 🔷June - September: Selection, shortlisting, interview and job offer. 🔷October -November: Restropective on the planned manpower requirement. This is the reason why it is best to start working on the resume, interview prep and skill trainings between October to February every year. Then, we are ready to apply for any job vacancies in between March until September when most recruitment activities are active. Here are some basic take aways that we can learn from: 🔥Being nervous is okay, but it is NOT okay if that feeling creates mental blocks from thinking on your feet. Do breathing exercise, find your comfortable eye contact and practice natural body language in a conversation. 🔥English proficiency is not a problem because we are all Malaysian. But, always be well-prepared to share your achievements from your college years or previous jobs. Remember your success stories and put them in your resume as reference. 🔥Always do research about the position. If you want to be an HR officer, read about basic HR functions. Get the job description, read about the career path, understand its critical requirement and connect with what you can offer to the position.
