Opportunities abound in NL Few weeks ago, I was invited to speak to fellow black enterpreneurs about my journey as a business leader in NL. Here are three (3) key insights I shared 1) There are lots of opportunities in NL because there are still many businesses lacking in the province. 2) Duplicating effort is required so that we have diverse options if we want to grow the economy. The way 1 person/group will deliver an idea is different from the way another will deliver the same idea. Therefore, because there is already a college offering project management courses doesn't mean you can't start your own college offering project management courses. Go for it! 3) Idea generation is easy. For example, look at other advanced provinces, are there successful business ideas that can be replicated in NL? If yes, start it. This quote, “What we lack in numbers, we will make up with quality”, suggests that success can be achieved through a focus on excellence rather than sheer volume. Consider these examples where the principal "quality over quantity" holds true: 🍫Instead of churning out mass-produced chocolates, a small, artisanal chocolate maker focuses on meticulous craftsmanship and using high-quality, ethical ingredients. The result is a product that may not flood the market in quantity but stands out in flavour and texture. This way, the business appeals to a certain clientele who are willing to pay a premium for its products. Since their 1965 separation from Malaysia, their remarkable journey to where they are today is a testament of their focus on prioritising the quality of its institutions, infrastructure, and human capital. ❤️Compared to more superficial connections, a small circle of friends who share common values and offer genuine support can contribute significantly to one's well-being and overall fulfilment. ⚔️In Zack Snyder's movie "300", King Leonidas and his 300 Spartan warriors are outnumbered by the Persian army led by King Xerxes. The Spartan warriors, known for their discipline, superior combat skills, and a relentless pursuit for winning battles, prove that the number of soldiers does not guarantee a victory. "Quality over quantity" emphasises that success is not measured solely by quantity, but by the value and excellence one brings to the table. Whether in business, education, nation building or even personal relationships, it is a mantra for us to live by a mindset of creating superior offerings and cultivating relationships. What an amazing event it turned out to be!🥳 We discussed some of the key issues and solutions at the DEI Advocates meetup on Tuesday. 🫶🏽 🥇How to influence organisational strategy? 🥈How to integrate leadership into prioritizing DEI? 🥉How to hold leadership accountable for organisational DEI? MY TOP NOTEWORTHY POINTS: 💪🏽 It is critical that #leadership understands the impact of diversity on the teams and company as a whole. 🎤 Individual voices matter to add to the collective. If you're from an #underrepresented group start telling your story. 🏆 Use examples and learn about companies with award winning #DEI strategies which attract the best skilled diverse talent globally to build innovative products that serve the global market. 💰 It always helps if it comes from #VCs and investors to have a mandate on the DEI strategy. Do you avoid engaging in organisational politics? Do you think, I don’t come to work to play games — I come to work to get things done? Do you think, I will get noticed if I do well in my work? I think the very mention of the words organisational politics makes people feel frustrated, and the corridors of corporates are filled with "How did she get that job?", "I am surprised he is leaving after the huge savings he made", "Why are we investing in that area/country/project?". I´ve seen many a leader leaving companies because they have opted out of politics, and there was noone to advocate for them at the top. Politics has a lot to answer for and it's important, as a leader, that you are politically savvy and you don't ignore politics. When I ask leaders to describe politics, it's normally no problem to describe their feelings about it; Draining, demotivating, toxic and unfair. Of course, it is, when we see unethical politics at play, it can crush people and really slow down the organisation. However, when I ask; What about ethical politics? There is usually a pause and then comes the answer; Those informal meetings to help stakeholders understand your priorities, the lunch to talk about one of your talents who isn't being seen, the lobbying of senior leaders outside your function to gain funding for a business critical project that is being deprioritized. As much as we may hate politics, they are happening right now in your company. Make sure you get your voice heard for the benefit of yourself, your people and the organisation as a whole. #politics #leadership #CEO
