This happens every couple of years. The contract between label and streaming platform expires, they renegotiate, threaten to remove catalogue etc and then usually a deal is reached. Fair play, that’s what UMG should be doing for their artists. But girl, the framing of this as “an open letter to the artists and songwriter community”? It’s not, it’s a letter to the UMG roster explaining why they are about to pull their music from TikTok. This happened a while back when Taylor Swift and UMG removed all her catalog from Spotify and then used that to leverage a better deal for both her and the label. Fair enough, she was driving her enormous fan base to the platform. But the whole thing was framed as a “standing up for small and independent artists” which it absolutely was not. At the end of the negotiations Tay Tay and UMG got a better deal from Spotify, the catalogue went back on the platform and they all walked away relatively happy. But literally nothing changed for the independent artists that were supposedly what was being fought for. This kind of feels like more of the same…

Sorry UMG. This was a bad decision on your part. A lot of your artists are on tiktok upset at this decision. We all know it’s about money. And not for your artists.

Wait, didn’t between you, Sony and WB sign 70 artists off TikTok in 2021? And then tell artists and managers in order for us to get your attention we have to have a “viral moment” on TikTok? I don’t recognize the music industry anymore..🧐

I have to ask, so are we finally gonna go back to you signing TALENT not viral sensations? Actual people who can sing? Because I have a full roster of those…

It's going to be very interesting to see how this plays out. I'm all for protecting the artists. Too many times platforms have built themselves on the backs of creatives and then turn around and not want to treat the creatives fairly. It's time for a change!

Social media nowadays launches the next stars because the labels react precisely to social media and “viral” songs. This leaves amazing artists lingering while sometimes less talented artists go viral on, say TikTok, because of a short lived dance craze. Return to the days of artist development and development amazing talent. 👍🏼

I wonder why the same logic wasn’t applied to YouTube?

It strikes me, that once again, the music industry is not taking new technology serious. It all started with iTunes and the fact that the industry agreed with Apple that they could sell a download at 99 cent. Ever since its been a struggle to get fair pay as an artist. Tiktok is just the latest new tech that the music industry did not take seriously. When agreeing for Tiktok to use music, they should have asked for fair pay then. In the end majors win, artists loose. What happened to 'content is king'

It's worth noting they've recently launched their own app at https://www.universalmusicforcreators.com/. Such a move is expected for any rights holder. They need to identify what sets them apart and create their own platform, much like Disney, HBO Max, Paramount, and others did to Netflix. While it's undoubtedly about supporting songwriters and artists, it seems they're also tired of TikTok controlling discovery. This move signifies a shift towards owning their own music discovery tool and reasserting control in signing artists with less leverage. I’m willing to bet that they dislike that artists can now control and understand their own data, giving them more leverage in negotiations for better deals. #ceoselfsaidit🦏

No more big industry for music and musicians. It's been fun trying to convince your gatekeepers and all. But I make more money selling and streaming directly from my website than I do trying to get noticed on Spotify and apple music. The so called, "music industry" is useless at this point.
