I am calling out sad. Not sick. Rethinking Empathy in the Workplace Listening to discussions hosted by Adam Grant highlighted some things for me about the role of empathy, especially at work. Here's what I've learned: Some quick definitions for everyone. Cognitive vs. Emotional Empathy(There is a reason why I am not saying Empathetic vs. Apathetic): Cognitive: Understanding others' feelings. Emotional: Feeling what others feel. The Pitfalls of Emotional Empathy: 1. We often empathize more with individuals than groups. 2. Empathy can be biased towards those similar to us. 3. Emotional overload from too much empathy can be exhausting. The Power of Compassion: - It's about actionable concern. - Instead of sharing pain, it's about actively trying to alleviate it. Compassion in Organizations: - Compassion = Warmth + Competence. - We don’t just need individual 'Toxin Handlers'. We need a compassionate organizational culture. - Compassionate organizations prioritize mental health, enact supportive policies, and champion small acts of compassion. Final thought: Let's strive for a workplace where understanding is balanced with actionable care. Compassion can be the key to a more supportive, productive, and harmonious work environment. Feel Free to listen to this great conversation, and tell me what you think. https://lnkd.in/g8d-VuP2

Offering "mental health days" is commendable. But a day off won't fix deeper issues rooted in company culture and daily practices. 𝟭. 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗸𝘀: A day off is great, but if employees return to an unsupportive environment, the benefit is fleeting. 𝟮. 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗗𝘆𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗰𝘀: Balance is essential. Understand the energy flow and ensure teams have flexibility in their approach. 𝟯. 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘆 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁: Every team member is navigating unique challenges. Approach colleagues with understanding and openness. 𝟰. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀: Beyond days off, offer coaching, counseling, and tools to support mental well-being. True well-being intertwines with daily work practices and culture. Let's prioritize holistic wellness, not just perks. #MentalHealth #FutureofWork #Leadership

🌟 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝘆𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸-𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗕𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 🌟 We've all heard about "𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬-𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦 𝘣𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦," but have you ever stopped to think about it? 🤔 Let's break it down. We don't balance our hobbies and physical fitness with life – we integrate them into our lives. Why should work be any different? Between ages 22 and 67, we spend about 82,000 hours working. That's a whopping 21% of our active adult lifetime (394K hours)! Yet, in the last decade, HR has been buzzing about achieving 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬-𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦 𝘣𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦. While we understand the sentiment, isn't it time we rethink this concept? 🧠 We don't talk about sleep-life balance, family-life balance, or fun-life balance. We integrate all these activities seamlessly into our lives. So why treat work like a separate entity? This mindset can create a false perception that work is an external burden with a sharp start and end. But for many of us, especially in brain-powered roles, switching off completely until the next working day is a rare luxury. Our work hours shape our social lives, influence our thinking, impact our interests, frustrations, happiness, and even our physical and mental health. 📉📈 Research shows that your manager can affect your mental health more than your doctor or therapist! This reality underscores the need to integrate work into our lives healthily and sustainably. At GRACE, we believe in integrating work into our lives. We provide effective techniques to manage this integration, protecting you and your team from psychological harm in the workplace. In Australia, everyone has the right to work in a healthy environment – physically and psychologically. Are you ready to protect your team from psychological harm in the workplace? 🛡️ Follow GRACE and be one of the first to uplift your team. #GRACE #WellBeWell #PsychosocialRisk #PsychologyHealth #MentalHealth #CompanyCultureTransition #PsychologyInjury #GRACEX

As a medico, there have been numerous occasions in our professional lives where working for 18 to 20 hours straight was the need of the hour. However, our passion, sense of responsibility, and the satisfaction derived from seeing the smiles on the faces of patients and their relatives serve as an effective mechanism for destressing. It is understandable that in other professions, the direct positive impact on humans may not exist to the same degree. I want to shed light on a crucial issue: the detrimental effects of glorifying long working hours in the workplace. Humans are intricate beings, not machines. We have personal lives, emotions, and mental health needs that demand attention. Recent news of a tragic suicide of a young, bright mind underscores the urgency of addressing mental health in the workplace. It's a stark reminder that life is precious, and suicide should never be an option. Employers hold a profound responsibility in this regard. They must create environments that prioritize the mental and emotional well-being of their employees. This means implementing policies that promote work-life balance, offering mental health resources, and fostering open communication. But let's take it a step further. I propose that every company appoint a dedicated professional counselor who can guide employees in mindfulness practices and provide support for issues such as anxiety and depression. It's a proactive measure to ensure the holistic well-being of every individual in the workplace. On the individual level, it's crucial to set boundaries and prioritize mental health. No job is worth sacrificing one's well-being. Both employers and employees must collaborate to cultivate healthier, sustainable work environments where individuals can thrive personally and professionally. Remember, asking for help isn't a sign of weakness; it's an act of strength. Together, let's create a world where everyone feels respected, supported, and empowered to prioritize their mental health and well-being above all else. Life truly is beautiful when we take care of ourselves and each other. Let's start the conversation and take action for a healthier, happier workplace. #mentalhealthmatters #worklifebalance #wellbeingfirst 💪💼🧠

Anyone have any advice on how to combat Sick-leave guilt? And I’m not even talking about a mental well-being day where we’re burnt out and need to rest our minds- I’m actually feeling guilty over a serious head injury where I had to take the day off to get a CT Scan! I truly wonder where this stems from inside me, why the guilt of not working just seems to completely take over me. This article explores that a lot of people who experience “sick-day-guilt” often feel like their managers don’t “believe them.” It emphasises that this stems from company culture and the trust between manager and employees. But all companies I’ve worked at, didn’t have micro-managey, toxic, distrusting environments. When I worked at CBA, having well-being breaks was actually part of our schedules and there were a lot of support when it came to mental and physical health. Even working at Odoo now, the culture is great, there’s a lot of trust and bond between the team. There is no correlation between my “sick-day-guilt” and company culture. Is it just capitalism existentialism? Could it be my parents, where one was a migrant worker and one was born just after the silent generation, both whom always worked hard in their careers? Could it be the education system enforcing students that attendance had a huge impact on the success of passing or failing the year? Could it be that “hustling” is now the new normal? I appreciate the Gen Z’S being more educated and informed about boundaries and work life balance, but this loop of guilt has always made me wonder where I’ve inherited it from. Thanks for reading while I have this awful migraine, waiting for my results. #sickdayguilt #sickleave #leave #wellbeing #wellness #companyculture #existentialism #read #worklifebalance https://lnkd.in/g7BJ8QfC

In the fast-paced world of our careers, it's all too common to overlook our well-being in the pursuit of productivity. Recent times have highlighted the blurring boundaries between work and personal life, often resulting in burnout and stress. Let's shift the focus towards creating a workplace culture that values mental health and work-life harmony. It's not solely about working harder; it's about finding the balance that leads to smarter, more fulfilling work. 🌟 Here are a few steps we can take: 1️⃣ **Break the Stigma**: Let's normalize conversations about mental health at work. Encourage open dialogue, support, and understanding. 2️⃣ **Set Boundaries**: Create clear boundaries between work and personal life. Disconnect when you need to recharge. 3️⃣ **Flexible Work Arrangements**: Advocate for flexible work options that accommodate individual needs. 4️⃣ **Self-Care**: Remember that self-care isn't selfish. Prioritize activities that recharge your mental and emotional batteries. 5️⃣ **Support Each Other**: Be a source of support for your colleagues. Kindness and empathy go a long way. Lets honor the workforce by recognizing that true productivity thrives in an environment where mental health is a priority. Let's build a future where work and well-being coexist harmoniously. 🤝 Happy Labor Day!!!! #MentalHealthMatters #WorkLifeBalance #HealthyWorkplace #ProductivityWithPurpose
