Do you know which 10th-century physician is considered one of the greatest surgeons of the Middle Ages? Born in Cordoba during the Islamic Golden Age, Abu al-Qasim al-Zahrawi established pioneering surgical practices – including eye interventions – which is why he's often referred to as the 'Father of Surgery.' His influential text, the Kitab Al-Tasrif, gave Al-Zahrawi lasting authority in Islamic and Western medicine as it was the first ever illustrated manuscript of its kind, and remained the go-to surgical guide for 500 years! His manuscript contained detailed descriptions of eye diseases and innovative surgical techniques to treat them.
