Professor Kevin McGuire is taking over from Professor Emeritus Stephen Schoenholtz as director of the Virginia Water Resources Research Center, while Associate Professor Daniel McLaughlin will take over as the new associate director. The center, which serves as a focal point for water education, outreach, and research throughout the commonwealth, is recognized as a national leader in educational collaboration and outreach efforts. "Our goal is to facilitate and strengthen partnerships,” said McGuire. "We have tremendous expertise in this university and throughout the commonwealth, and our aim is to connect our knowledge and expertise with others looking to tackle the water challenges of today and tomorrow." The increasing polarization of the United States is being showcased by policymakers across the country through attacks on diversity, equity, and inclusion in both practice and scholarship. While these attacks have real implications for our work in higher education, they also have real implications for our own humanity and that of our peers and students, both current and future. The 2023 ACPA-ASHE Presidential Symposium Bridging the Divide: Addressing the Political Landscape of DEI Work & Scholarship in Higher Education will provide attendees with the virtual opportunity to learn from practitioners and scholars about the short-term and long-term implications of the current political climate, examples of professional and personal resilience, and discussions about the potential paths forward. Tomorrow marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, honouring the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process. The CCAC encourages members across its community to use today as a day of remembrance, reflection, action, and learning. The CCAC also continues to support the "Towards reconciliation: 10 Calls to Action to natural scientists working in Canada", a document that “challenges the scientific community to recognize that reconciliation requires a new way of conducting natural science, one that includes and respects Indigenous communities, rights, and knowledge, leading to better scientific and community outcomes.” https://lnkd.in/gmmSwRdK

My thesis, Heads in the Sand, won the 2024 Richard P. Taub Thesis Prize from UChicago's Public Policy Studies department for its "original and extensive research" (their words, not mine). It focused on describing the impact of climate change on Lake Michigan water levels to understand future implications for beach access across the state of Illinois. Through a mix of geospatial and legal analysis, I find that up to 60% of beach spaces may be fully inundated under the most extreme climate scenarios by 2040. The full thesis is linked below, but out of respect for your time I advise you not to try to read the full thing. Also, I graduated. After graduation, I will be a Dunn Fellow for the Governor's Office of Illinois under Deputy Governor Bria Scudder, who oversees executive agencies related to public safety, infrastructure, energy, and the environment. On to the next chapter!
