Your HIRING PROCESS is the reason candidates are BAILING. I know, I know… It’s hard to believe. Here’s what I know to be true about hiring in Atlanta: 1. ‘The hiring process takes too long.’ Each time you add a step to the hiring process you risk losing the interest of a qualified candidate. Even in today’s market, candidates have choices. In your process to decide if they are the one for you, they are ALSO deciding if you are the one for them. Don’t make that decision easier for them. Based upon our research it’s taking companies 57% longer to hire than in 2021. Don’t fall into the statistic. Make your process streamlined. 2. ‘I want to hear from hiring managers more.’ Candidates want to know feedback. They want to do BETTER and learn from experiences. They want to meet people they will be working alongside. Don’t miss the chance to reply to a candidate’s email or thank you note. Don’t forget to set expectations of what comes next in the interview and hiring process with your company. 3. ‘The process can be too one-sided and inflexible.’ Candidates have options. If your interview technique and style is all one-sided, that’s a turn off. Be flexible with your interview scheduling. If you can’t be flexible in talking with a potential new employee, how will that employee think of you as a manager or HR partner? You are setting the tone of what it’s like working at your company. Don’t turn people off before you get a chance to tell them the perks your company offers. To read more about ways to improve your hiring process, click on the link in the comments below. President & Hiring Strategist | I Help Leaders Build a Streamlined Hiring Process | Skip Expensive Testing and Ineffective Technology | Use Proven Hiring Strategies to Reduce Costs, Hire and Retain Top Talent
HIRING WITHOUT MEETING THE CANDIDATE! REALLY? As organizations rely increasingly on technology to perform the hard-skill tasks that were once performed by people, they are applying much less rigorous criteria to hiring new employees. Many companies now hire new employees without ever meeting face-to-face with the candidates. Often, they rely on recruiters to forward resumes of qualified candidates without even the most rudimentary screening for fit. BUT HIRING IS ABOUT PEOPLE Yet people skills are becoming an increasingly critical asset in the workplace, especially as technology takes over some hard-skill functions. They’ve become so important that organizations now refer to them as POWER SKILLS. It seems ironic that organizations would abandon their sound hiring processes when alignment between a candidate and the organization has become more critical than ever. GOING DOWN THE WRONG ROAD As organizations suffer the disruptive consequences of hiring employees who lack the soft skills required to do their jobs, they’re often adopting new technologies in their hiring processes. These technologies may streamline the process and enable them to hire new employees more quickly, but they do not address the underlying problem: badly or improperly screened candidates simply will not fit into the organization. And a critical component in assessing fit properly is conducting face-to-face interviews with potential candidates to assess clearly defined soft skills. In-person interviews provide the best setting for genuine discussion and observation of body language. FINDING THE SOLUTION Based on my 30 years in search and career consulting, I’ve concluded that COMPANIES GET INTO TROUBLE IN TRYING TO HIRE THE RIGHT PEOPLE BECAUSE THEY DON’T REALLY KNOW WHAT THEY’RE LOOKING FOR. They may have identified clearly the hard skills and experience required for the job, but they have not taken the time to clearly identify the essential soft skills required. As a result, they suffer the consequences of high staff turnover, dissatisfaction in the workplace, low morale, poor productivity, increased costs and unhappy customers. Organizations can avoid these headaches by adopting a hiring process that addresses three key issues: 1. What traits does a candidate need to fit the role and the organization? 2. How can these traits be identified during the hiring process? 3. What tools and practices can be incorporated into the hiring process to ensure that the right person is selected for the role? With a hiring process that works, organizations can drastically reduce their costs while focusing on operating more efficiently without the distraction of constant and unnecessary turnover. #hiring #hiringstrategy #assessingfit #Interviewing
