This is a great thought piece on the important role that Transbay will play in helping San Francisco's economy into its next normal. It's helpful to think of the SF Bay Area as a polycentric economy. We have the three major cities of #sanfrancisco , #oakland and #sanjose , but also a series of secondary cities that play a central role in our tech and sciences based economy: #sunnyvale , #mountainview, #paloalto, #redwoodcity , #sancarlos , #Emeryville, #berkeley, #sanleandro (I am so on your side, City of San Leandro), #SanBruno, etc. In a region that hasn't built enough housing in the last 40-years and has its economy spread over 2+ hours of commute distances, hybridization and virtualization are actually competitive advantages. It's preferable to have an employee living in Albany and hybrid ‘x’ days a week to an employer in SF than it is to have that employee (and that employer) relocate to Austin, Charlotte, Nashville etc because of affordability and quality of life. What's critical in this next phase of the Bay Area's future is that we continue to underpin our jobs and housing growth to high-quality and convenient (emphasis) transit. Everyone loves a fancy workplace but what really moves the needle for workers is choice + flexibility + quality in the live-work nexus. As many reflect on the #futureofdowntown and the #futureofwork and #office utilization, one key enduring value proposition for downtowns is the existing #transit infrastructure. Downtowns are often where many of our cities began and first built a dense transit network, which has often been reinforced over decades. Today, the level of transit infrastructure connecting to downtowns is unique and unparalleled in most #metropolitan regions. Building new #transit has become so hard that #downtowns’ infrastructure advantage will persist. 2. Location and #density matter. The recent Amtrak service disruption due to the damaged garage above the NYC tracks has sparked discussions about infrastructure safety. "I think the level of urgency this time was much faster," Professor Iskander remarked. "Garages are deteriorating because of de-icing salts, and we're all driving heavier cars than our parents, which is a factor that requires old garages to be checked periodically." HAMPTON, VA — A significant traffic shift at the entrance of the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel VDOT said could begin as early as May 1 hasn’t happened yet. According to Communications Manager Paula Miller, the traffic shift onto the new eastbound trestle at the Hampton shoreline will likely not happen “before Thursday evening.” She said May 1 was the target date, and while crews are close to completing the work, they are still finishing up the final touches. She did not have an exact date or time, but said when it does happen, it will be overnight so the shift will already be in place by the morning commute. The traffic shift will affect drivers traveling from Hampton to Norfolk on Interstate 64. Traffic will permanently shift to the right at the Hampton shoreline onto the newly constructed North Trestle as part of the HRBT’s $3.9 billion expansion project. Once the shift is complete, crews will begin work to the demolish the previous trestle. Digital signage will be in place to direct traffic. The shift comes about two weeks after another major development in the expansion. Mary the tunnel boring machine completed the first of two new tunnels for the project. The overall project, which started in November 2020, is now not expected to be fully complete until August 2027. When the expansion is completed, there will be two tunnels going both north and south at the HRBT. 🚧 Big news from the rail construction industry! Progress is being made on the construction of the landmark HS2 viaduct that will bring high-speed trains to the new Curzon Street station in Birmingham. 🔎 The completed sections mark a significant step forward in the programme to build a series of viaducts carrying the railway through Birmingham's industrial heartland and into the city centre. 🏗️ The monumental task is being undertaken by Balfour Beatty VINCI with a team of over 200 people working tirelessly, they've managed to pour 3,700 cubic metres of concrete to complete sections of the Curzon 3 viaduct. That's no small task! 💡 Now, it's not just about the technical aspects. This project is not only promoting connectivity but also redefining public spaces and the city's skyline.
