I would like to share this McKinsey & Company 2024 quarterly report on Gen AI, which sets out in a simple and pragmatic way how to turn exponential tech potential into customer value generation in 2024 🚀. The bottom line, if I could shape it into a hypothesis, would be that Gen AI at scale is a mindset that can only be built on solid pillars composed of: ✅ 1. Creating a competitive advantage through an iterative approach by implementing a taker model for productivity improvements while building sharper applications for competitive advantage. These applications, being prioritized through a needs assessment and customer segmentation analysis, focus the 80/20 on what customers care about. Thus, allowing us to fail smart (at the lowest impact, and learning fast). ✅2. Upskilling teams, centralizing standards management, and forming squads to scale up: Have a strong head start to accelerate efforts and build subsequent structures for decentralized-cross knowledge sharing, ensuring a seamless customer experience. Minimize the multi-platform approach as much as possible. If required, generate one user experience for employees to create a homogeneous in-house approach from a look & feel standpoint, facilitating adoption and simplifying the change management strategy implementation. ✅3. Setting up the technology architecture & processes to scale: Reuse technology in a consistent way. Define one source of truth for approved tools, code, and components based on the right processes to leverage for different use cases. Prioritize testing over development and define clearly who will need to sign off on each stage of the process and when. Build copilots that simplify code creation but are low cost to maintain, monitor, and control. ✅4. Ensuring data quality: Value from LLMs will depend on how well it takes advantage of its own data. Establish taxonomies so models can access the data they need. Build value not only from structured data (traditional approach) but also from unstructured data; therein lies innovation. ✅5. Creating but reusing in a smart way: Establish asset development standards and maintain a dynamic knowledge base by documenting decisions, failures, and risk mitigation strategies. Recently, I attended a fascinating and highly applicable event focused on implementing customer-facing GenAI. I'm excited to share some key insights. First off, a big thanks to Accion Labs, especially Saurabh, Greg DeCarlo, and Chetan K., for their extensive knowledge sharing, and to Lee Groff for expertly organizing the meetup. Thanks also to Ryan Wong for insightful table discussions on his considerable GenAI experiences. 💡 The key challenge in scaling customer-facing GenAI is managing costs. 💰 The more performant LLMs are expensive to use regularly. To mitigate big bills, it's essential to pre-process the prompts, although this itself can be costly. In a decision-making role, I would want to be absolutely certain that GenAI would provide big value/savings for the organization. In essence, know your flywheel: https://lnkd.in/ef6PN-RR. Alternatively, finding a vendor specializing in specific needs (like customer service bots) could be a practical first approach.
