CHESTERFIELD TOWNSHIP, MI - A July 4 fire that caused extensive damage to a Michigan house was likely ignited by fireworks, according to the Chesterfield Township Fire Department.

The fire department responded around 10:30 p.m. to a house fire on the 26000 block of Fairwood Drive in Macomb County.

When crews arrived, a garage attached to a two-story house was “heavily involved with fire,” a news release said.

The homeowners were able to escape.

The Chesterfield Township Fire Department used a steam nozzle to stop the flames from spreading. It was quickly contained, but the fire damaged the house and high heat damaged a neighboring house.

Crews from Selfridge, Macomb Township, New Baltimore, New Haven and Lenox also responded to the blaze.

One firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion at McLaren Hospital.

The fire remains under investigation.
