Although Havasu Falls is arguably one of the most gorgeous falls here, there is another one you may not have heard of! Tucked away off of the North Kaibab Trail is a place called Ribbon Falls. This is a long and hard hike but 100% worth it. Round trip it is 16.8 miles with over 5K ft. of elevation gain. Or if you want to make it even longer like I did, you can make it a stop along the way when doing Rim-to-Rim. This route is much harder and ends up being over 25 miles. This hike is no joke and you NEED to come prepared. When we started the hike in the top of the canyon, it was very chilly. But temperatures rise fast and by time we were in the bottom of the canyon, it was 100 degrees out. Ma

You should start where the sunrise viewpoint (Pico Ariero) is and hike 5.5 miles to the top of the highest mountain on Madeira (Pico Ruivo) After you enjoy the views at Pico Ruivo, you only have to walk 1 hour to Achada do Teixeira. This is where you will get picked up and taken back to your car at Pico Arieiro. Make sure to set up a transfer/taxi the day before. The rooms are surprisingly generous & cosy but it’s hard to pay attention to anything other than the picture windows, which during my stay framed two elephants having a stand off over who got to drink from the waterhole first! Salt Lick Safari Lodge also has an underground lookout right by the waterhole where you can get incredibly close to the wildlife in a safe environment.
