These rare photos were taken by photographer Karl Kubesh in the Winter Palace, the imperial residence of Tsar Nicholas ӀӀ.

The Russian royal family had numerous palaces, mansions and dachas (summer houses) throughout Russia (and what is now, in some cases, abroad) and many of them are veritable architectural masterpieces. After the change in government, all of them were nationalized into state property, but there are still some you cannot get into.
