They appear to be heading towards what scholars have interpreted as an altar/shrine. The women’s rich clothing, fine jewelry, and meticulous grooming indicate the social status and importance of this composition.

The Blue Monkeys: From our Akrotiri Collection which features frescos from the ancient Minoan City of Akrotiri on the island Santorini. Monkeys, indigenous to Egypt, held an important place in ancient Egyptian theology. Possibly brought to the island as gifts and pets, a monkey’s skull was found in Thera and is evidence of the artist’s ability to study the animals first-hand.

This is an image of a dolphin fresco found within the ancient palace of Knossos on Crete. The dolphins are representative of the Minoan civilization in that they were located on an island and were primarily a naval civilization, so an encounter with dolphins and large fish would have been inevitable.
