As the nation prepares to celebrate its independence with bursts of fireworks and gatherings filled with patriotic cheer, a number of businesses will close their doors to join in on the celebrations.

Independence Day is a federal holiday so a number of government buildings will close Thursday. Most commercial businesses do choose to have their doors open on the day to allow for last minute shopping, but many will have reduced hours depending on the location.

Here is what you need to know about stores opening and closing on the 4th of July.

In short, most every government building will be closed down for the holiday. All non-essential services will close. This includes banks, post offices, schools, libraries, the stock market and city halls.

Essential government services will continue over the holiday. This includes law enforcement, fire fighters, hospitals and utility services.

Do UPS, FedEx, Amazon deliver on 4th of July?

UPS closes down for the 4th of July. UPS Express Critical will still be available, but all other shipping and deliveries will be delayed a day.

Similar to UPS, FedEx closes its doors for the 4th of July, but FedEx Custom Critical will be available.

Amazon does not deliver any kind of packages on the 4th of July.
