Georgia baseball coach Wes Johnson gets hefty raise after successful first season

Wes Johnson's impressive first season as Georgia baseball coach will reward him handsomely.

Johnson received an extension last week through 2030 that will pay him $1 million, the Athens Banner-Herald learned through an Open Records Request.

That's a near 30% increase from Johnson's $702,000 salary he signed when hired last May.

Johnson led the Bulldogs to the Super Regional for the first time since 2008, where they lost to N.C. State in three games to narrowly miss the College World Series.

Johnson was 12th in pay in the 14-team SEC last season, ahead of only South Carolina's Mark Kingston and Missouri's Kerrick Jackson. His new salary moves him up three spots among the 14 coaches of the old SEC. It is not yet known what Jim Schlossnagle's contract is at Texas, which officially joined the league on Monday, but the former Texas A&M coach earned $1.46 million with the Aggies.

Johnson came to UGA after a brief stint as LSU's pitching coach in 2023, where he managed a rotation led by No. 1 MLB draft pick Paul Skenes who led the Tigers to a national title. He was also pitching coach at Mississippi State and Arkansas before joining the Minnesota Twins in 2018.

Georgia's 43-17 record in 2024 was the most ever by a first-year coach in school history.
