A shooter killed himself inside an office building Monday afternoon near Hamilton Place mall, but no one else was shot or injured, Chattanooga police Sgt. Victor Miller said at a news conference.

Chattanooga police and other law enforcement agencies responded shortly after 2 p.m. to a report of an active shooter situation at 2034 Hamilton Place Blvd., Miller said.

The shooter has not been identified.

The office building just south of Hamilton Place, part of the CBL Center, contains offices for a government agency, a plastic surgery center and a logistics company, among other firms.

It was a very large response, with more than 100 law enforcement personnel stationed in the nearby mall parking lot.

"A shooter was inside the building and was attempting to execute a plan," Miller said. "That failed. We found that he shot himself, and he is deceased."

It is unclear if the individual fired any other shots before shooting himself. It is also unclear if there were any specific targets for the planned shooting.

"That's a part of the investigation that we are still working through," Miller said.

Authorities do not believe there were any other people involved in this plan, and it is not believed the shooter ever left the building or posed any threat outside the building, Miller said.

Hamilton Place mall and the surrounding businesses have started to lift lock-downs and resume normal operations, he said.

Members of the public are still asked to steer clear of the area, which will continue to have multiple active law enforcement agencies.

"We will be out here for many hours," he said.

The Chattanooga Police Department plans to release additional information as the investigation continues.

"Earlier in the day no one would know an incident like this could occur, but we responded," Miller said. "They put their lives on the line every day for our community."
