Digital British Islam Project

Archive-It Partner Since: Apr, 2019

Organization Type: Colleges & Universities

Organization URL: http://www.digitalbritishislam.com

Description:

This is the archiving site for the ESRC funded Digital British Islam project (grant number ES/W002175/1), UWTSD's project partners are Coventry University and the University of Edinburgh. The three-year project, entitled ‘Digital British Islam: How do Cyber Islamic Environments impact everyday life?’, is led by Professor Gary R. Bunt (University of Wales Trinity Saint David - UWTSD), with Co-Investigator Dr Sariya Cheruvallil-Contractor (Coventry University) and Co-Investigator Professor Frédéric Volpi (University of Edinburgh). The team includes two research fellows, Dr Khadijah Elshayyal and Dr Sadek Hamid, and two Post-Doctoral Researchers: Dr Laura Jones (UWTSD) and Dr Alamgir Ahmed (Coventry University).

The archiving team comprises Professor Bunt, Dr Hamid, Dr Ahmed and Dr Jones. The archives explore different aspects of ‘Cyber-Islamic environments’ (CIEs), an umbrella term used to describe how different forms of internet media are used within diverse Muslim contexts. The research maps how CIEs are growing and evolving in relation to intergenerational changes within diverse UK Muslim communities. Using a range of methodological approaches, the research team are exploring how digital practices are shaping every day, in-person and ‘real’ experiences of Muslim beliefs in Britain - focused on three themes that generate much public debate - religious authority, gender, and political agency. Collections will be released in stages, and will continue to be updated during the project's duration.

More information is on the digitalbritishislam.com website. Updates will be posted on X @digibritislam (https://twitter.com/digibritislam)

Islam, Academia & Research

Archived since: Mar, 2024

Description:

The Islam, Academia & Research collection forms part of Digital British Islam’s archive. It represents a work-in-progress. The focus here is on the study of Islam and Muslims in higher education, which is relevant in informing central themes of DBI’s work, as well as fulfilling a need to archive and record the diverse work undertaken in the field – with a particular focus on the study of Islam and Muslims in the UK. Activities take place at multiple levels, from undergraduate and postgraduate teaching at institutional levels to research projects (funded and otherwise) and the activities of individual researchers in the field. The collection also includes the significant activities of subject associations. There is cross-over in this collection with activities at other educational institutions (highlighted in the Education collection). The study of Islam and Muslims can be multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary in scope, with levels of ambiguity in terms of definition, reflecting the complexity of fields as well as the multifarious components associated with ‘Islamic Studies.’
