Let’s talk ticketing queues. I was chatting to a research participant last week that said, “Who even knows how the Ticketek Australia queue works”? ”Like do I get a number? Is it random?” ”I was sitting in there for like 3 hours”. ”Some of my friends got in way before me”… And it goes on. And she’s not alone. We hear LOTS of this when talking to fans. Let’s just say it’s often not the ideal “User Experience”. But why is that? Well because for one, as Lou Downe reminds us; “A good service sets the expectations a user has of it”. And most of the time, ticketing queues just ain’t doin that. Secondly - and this is some recent research backed conjecture on my behalf - users aren’t all in a queue for the same reason. Sure they all want to get tickets - but they’re often motivated by quite different things: 💡I’m the only one in my group who is free at this time (common) 💡I’m the only one that has the money 💡I want to earn the credit card points 💡I’m the only organised one in my crew 💡I’m gonna try my luck too, to increase our odds (significant waste of energy). It’s worth stepping back and thinking about all of these drivers. Especially in a cost of living crunch. Designers - are you being asked to provide measurable proof of how your work impacts business outcomes with metrics? Are you unsure of what to measure, when and how? Being able to assess the impact of your design decisions can not only have a positive effect on your product and end users, but is also a skill increasingly in demand for design roles. Our Senior Product Designer Rosie Dent-Spargo held a superb session in February with the Product Design team to create values and principles. Using guidance from Dan Makoski's book Uplifting Design, the session was dynamic and layered. The focus wasn't solely on creation, but also how we might embed principles and values into daily work. At Nomos One, my Design Team are what we lovingly like to call generalists (or unicorns). We don’t specialise in particular areas of User Experience or Design, as we are too small to make that feasible. As part of this, we need to be able to conduct research both at the beginning of our process (Discovery), but also at the end (Evaluation Testing – covering usability and feedback loops). The key difference between an Intermediate, and a Senior for these areas is level of experience and leadership.  It takes time to build up an arsenal of what testing method/tool to use to get the right information, how to ask non-leading questions, how to efficiently setup research and analyse the results, and overall, your confidence in conducting research. A senior has a toolkit of knowledge and skill around this and leads the process, upskilling others as they go, whereas an Intermediate helps throughout the process and just needs to have an understanding. In our job, we need success metrics to determine whether the solution is solving the underlying problem, and what the customer’s experience is. Otherwise, we would never know whether we’ve done a good job or not! At Nomos One, we use Heap to track analytics to measure these success metrics outside of formal interactions with customers. It tells us what is happening so we can have more detailed follow up conversations with customers for areas of interest in order to learn why something is happening. Our Seniors are responsible for making sure our Heap IDs are setup correctly in our application, and dashboards are created with charts linking to what we are measuring. We often use terms like 'adaptability' as a panacea for navigating a career in design leadership, but the degree to which we actually lean into this principle defines not only our chance for success, but places our very identity as a designer in the spotlight. Those of us who once upon a time lovingly and painstakingly employed craft for a living tend to have a hard time with this transition. Reality, aka business, calls for this shift in demeanour, as no two domains have the same needs from a design function. > Different business lifecycles dictate different approaches to fulfill needs > Whether a company understands the potential value that design possesses dictates needs > Consumer vs. internal tooling; executive personalities; the experiential appetite of customers; the leverage of a sales function—each dictate needs The degree to which other functions have scooped up what many designers consider to be core to their toolbox—e.g. ideation facilitation, information architecture, holistic vision, etc.—will dictate both the perceived and actual need for design. This variability manifests in headcount investments, feature investments, design initiative investments, tooling investments, strategic investments, etc. Look, there's a big difference between designing an agency practice, and leading a design function in-house. Huge. Within an agency, every investment made in the size and capabilities of a practice has a direct tie to both actual and potential client work being pitched. > Methods pay the bills. > Smart thinking pays the bills. > Gorgeous solutions pay the bills. > Ancillary design led business models, such as work shopping and certificate courses pay the bills. A studio or agency doesn't engage the client with a, "let's just ship it, learn, and clean it up later" mindset—that pragmatism belongs to the territory of many, if not most domains with in-house design teams doing what they can to play ball. When you have the opportunity to lead or build a function, take the time to assess the DNA that you've immersed yourself within, ask all the necessary questions, and begin aligning on investments that reflect the philosophy of the business—meet the company where it is—while keeping a pragmatic eye on leveling up your definition of quality over time. We all want to work where the business just "gets it," but your job is to slowly bring leadership along while proving that you get business as well. Like it or not, delivering impact is a team sport.

Always open with 'what's the point' of the work done, show, engage and tell people why this is important. Be clear, user centred and actionable. Management The above clearly addresses internal communication. As designers, we report/communicate to our peers and colleagues. The design ops. is an inevitable part of it.
