Small Business & Non-Profit Secrets to Success: The Fade Shop

How a Dallas barbershop gives back to its community

In 2005, the Dallas, Texas barbershop The Fade Shop opened its doors for the first time. The business was a culmination of a lifelong dream for owner Ozell Graham, but his path to entrepreneurship wasn’t a direct one. Graham, the son of a barber, was serving in the United States Army when he decided to follow in his father’s footsteps. He opened the first Fade Shop in the 1990s in an overseas army base tent. He gave haircuts to “boost morale and help soldiers to cope with being away from their families.”

Nearly 30 years later, The Fade Shop is an award-winning franchise with three locations and a celebrity clientele roster that includes Usher, Snoop Dogg and Common. But its impact goes far beyond affordable haircare; the business holds regular back-to-school events and mentoring programs that provide free haircuts, school supplies and other assistance to underprivileged families.

You can learn more about how Ozell Graham turned his dream into a reality in this interview that Emmy Award-winning producer Rushion McDonald hosts.
