Coastal cities have long thrived as bustling hubs of trade and culture. But with climate change altering our shorelines, we face new challenges. Rising seas, fiercer storms, and erosion demand urgent solutions. At Hunter's Point South in NYC, we’re leading by example. This former industrial zone is now a beacon of sustainable development, harmonizing with nature to guard against floods and rising tides. Hear more from Vincent Lee, Principal, on Hunter's Point South and explore the actions were taking to build resilience into coastal cities: https://lnkd.in/g4B9brDS #WeAreArup #ChangingCoastlines #UrbanResilience #ClimateAction #HuntersPointSouth

How can underground rail improve a city’s livability? Copenhagen has expanded its metro system with five new underground stations, connecting the city centre to the southern harbour district Sydhavn and the neighbourhood Valby. The extension of the M4 metro line aims to improve citywide mobility, alleviate congestion, and promote the development of neighbourhoods in the south of the Danish capital. We delivered architecture, structural engineering, geotechnics, and tunnel ventilation design services to TUNN3L JV, the project’s design & build contractor. Previously, we worked on the M3 loop line Cityringen and the M4 line extension to Nordhavn for the The Copenhagen Metro and Greater Copenhagen Light Rail, supporting the growth of the city's low carbon metro network. Understanding how communities experience racial inequity is critical to helping us shape inclusive urban environments. Perhaps a negative perception of a place is deterring investment and development, or residents are underrepresented in decision making positions meaning their needs are not considered. Together with decosm and Social Broadcasts, we partnered with residents from marginalised communities in two areas of London (Newham and Thamesmead) to explore how communities experience, engage with, and are affected by the built environment. Our new report introduces a framework that urban practitioners, of any discipline, can use to understand how their decisions directly and indirectly impact people living in the cities and spaces they design. We call these areas of impact the ‘layers of the city’: narratives, agency & power, interactions, spaces, and systems. Learn more and discover how you can share your own thoughts and insights or collaborate with us to put these insights into practice on projects: https://lnkd.in/edZuA-34 #WeAreArup #RacialEquity

Our connection with the ocean is profound. It has shaped life on Earth and continues to influence our daily lives in visible and invisible ways. While humanity has thrived thanks to the ocean, we've also significantly altered it. How can we protect our seas while using them responsibly? #BlueHorizons, a new branded series presented by the World Ocean Council and produced by BBC StoryWorks, dives into our intrinsic connection with the ocean. Through human-led stories, the series explores how the ocean is connected with each and every one of our lives – be it the ecosystem feeding livelihoods, the production and transport of products we use everyday, or the water we need to stay alive. Featured series include contributions from: everwave, Odfjell SE, Aga Khan Foundation, Nestlé Purina PetCare Europe, The Aspen Institute, Science Foundation Ireland, Coral Reef Alliance, Arup, Acadian Seaplants, High Seas Alliance, RightShip, Sustainable Surf, Bloomberg Philanthropies Ocean Fund, ICEYE, Ørsted 👉 Watch the full series here : https://lnkd.in/e6mqZBJX

The world is facing record breaking temperatures. But people experience heatwaves differently depending on where they live in cities, so it was great to see the Financial Times publish a letter from Dima Zogheib, our Nature Positive Design lead, on how we can best target solutions. We know nature can help cool down cities, but we need to distribute it well so everyone can enjoy access to it. Chief heat officers can play a key role in making that happen. #WeAreArup
Extreme heat is becoming more life threatening, and the Financial Times report on heat deaths was a timely reminder as we face the hottest summer on record. As we highlighted in our Arup Urban Heat Snapshot, this danger doesn’t affect everyone equally, so it’s vital we take action to protect the vulnerable populations most at risk in cities. I wrote to the FT about the action needed to keep cities liveable – including using AI and digital tools to model how our designs influence urban ‘hot spots’. To keep focus on the problem and galvanise this action, cities need to follow the examples of Athens, Dhaka, and others to appoint chief heat officers. It has been inspiring to work with Eleni (Lenio) Myrivili who has spearheaded action in Athens and globally to help build resilience to heat, so it is great to see her work and others reach a wider audience. #heatwave #urbanresilience #climateaction

🌊 Historic Partnership Launched to Transform Water Security in Lagos! 🌍 Today, the Lagos State government launched the Lagos Water Partnership (LWP), a groundbreaking initiative in collaboration with the Resilient Water Accelerator (RWA) that will safeguard its growth and enhance water security. This platform brings together investors, experts, and policymakers to address critical water security issues and enhance climate resilience in Lagos. Home to 20 million people and one of Africa’s fastest-growing cities, Lagos faces significant water and climate challenges. Despite its abundant water resources, only 10% of residents have access to municipal water, and the city is highly vulnerable to climate change impacts such as sea-level rise and flooding. The LWP aims to unlock new financing for essential climate-resilient water projects, including urban and rural water supply infrastructure and innovative sanitation facilities. This collaborative effort marks a major milestone in RWA’s mission to improve water management and access in vulnerable communities.
