In my letter, on behalf of Metals For Humanity (M4H), I respond to a column about BHP’s potential acquisition of Anglo American in Lex, the FT’s famous investment column. With M&A activity in the sector on the rise, my letter points out that potential acquisitions must ensure the protection, promotion and integration of local mining communities. It is vital for us as an industry that we demonstrate how, at its acme, mining can be a watchword for sustainability and that it can even be, whisper it softly, a force for good. #mining #sustainability #communities

Great read in the Financial Times about CalPERS statement of intent on #climateinvestment opportunities. Looking to deploy $25bn into private assets as part of their #lowcarbon assets portfolio. They're explicit about making these investments for "alpha and outperformance, because we see the investment opportunity set from this really fundamental change in the economy,” said Cashion [Peter, CalPERS' managing investment director]. “At the same time, it’ll have a side benefit of having a portfolio that has a lower carbon intensity.” And for #realestate, it's all about #greenbuildings - as Cashion is quoted as saying: “The measurement for what qualifies in your real estate portfolio as green is becoming easier”. The money is clearly moving in the sustainable direction. JPMorgan Chase & Co.'s Global Head of #Energy Strategy and Head of EMEA #OilandGas Equity Research Christyan Malek has put out a note to the firm’s clients warning that higher interest rates, inflation and global conflict will materially slow the #energytransition. His timeline: multiple decades, if not generations. In the research note, which I have read, the two actions identified to most meaningfully address #climatechange are (1) switching from #coal to #gas, which could reduce global emissions by 17% and (2) setting a global #carbon price which would facilitate "government policies to focus on balancing social and environmental concerns". Brunel Pension Partnership Limited has co-filed a resolution at Shell with Follow This and 26 other investors on scope 3 emissions reduction target. Faith Ward, Brunel's CRIO has responded to statements made in Shell's proxy statement. Full quote: "We dispute Shell's claims that the resolution is "against both good governance and shareholders’ interests, and also has negative consequences for our customers". After all, Scope 3 typically accounts for 89% of an energy sector company's total emissions. We are seeking a comprehensive target from Shell which includes its LNG business, considering the risk of additional carbon exposure. Given the scale of its operations and its influence, Shell should fulfil its commitment to set appropriate targets, engage with its value chain and shape policy to enable a smooth energy transition – we don’t perceive these activities as value-destructive. In fact, they are in line with our fiduciary duty as an investor to ensure that the company meets its climate commitments."

Against the backdrop of the ongoing debate and conflicting data surrounding various aspects of #energytransition, the overarching trend towards new and sustainable energy system continues to gain momentum. It's important to remember that different sectors and regions are undergoing their own #energytransitions, each with its own timelines, ambitions, policy support, and economic factors at play. And it has been clear that we will need a broad and diverse set of solutions – and perhaps even all of them – not only to address the #energytransition but also to meet the growing global #energydemand. New insights briefing from the Energy Transitions Commission focused on the importance of not only raising ambition in the next round of NDCs under the Paris Agreement, but also making stronger links to national policies and increased government and industry collaboration on implementation. The ETC recommends that “NDCs 3.0” define: - Clear and detailed roadmaps for implementation of accelerated climate action backed by strong government policy (e.g., quantitative targets for GW of renewables, phase out dates for bans on the sale of gasoline or diesel engine vehicles). - Measurable, comprehensive (covering all sectors and GHGs) and granular targets for emissions reductions. - Investable plans, especially for emerging markets, clearly stating the investment and international climate finance required to deliver stated targets. https://lnkd.in/erxp23YN

A first-of-its-kind University of Oxford analysis has found that damage to the natural environment is slowing the UK economy and could lead to an estimated 12% reduction to GDP in the years ahead - larger than the hit to GDP from the global financial crisis or Covid-19. A great report on methane flaring in 2023. It is great in the visualisation and information content sense, but not so great in its results. Oil companies wastefully burnt more gas last year, which is disappointing, to say the least. Have a look if you want to know who the leaders were and which countries imported the largest volumes of "flared gas". #methaneemissions https://lnkd.in/epNxBQfU
