Are your pistons all the same (symmetrical), right-handed, left-handed or a combination of both?

On some cylinder head designs, the spark plug is not always opposite the intake manifold like a conventional V-8, but for the sake of identifying whether your engine needs right, left, or symmetrical pistons, we will use that engine design.

At CP Carrillo and Arias, we determine if the piston is a right, left, or all the same by the following: Put the spark plug side of the piston towards you, and the side of the piston that goes towards the intake manifold away from you (for a hemispherical chamber with a different spark plug location, we would put the exhaust pocket towards you and the intake away from you). If you draw a line down the center of the piston, from skirt to skirt, is the piston symmetrical – the same on both sides? Wherever the intake is, that determines what ‘hand’ that piston is. If the intake is on the right side, the piston is a right. If the intake is on the left, the piston is a left. Some engines require half of the pistons to be rights and the other half lefts. Most common 2 and 4 valve cylinder heads use symmetrical pistons, but there are cylinder head designs out there that are 2 and 4 valve that require a non-symmetrical piston.

left vs right

Are all pistons the same in all cylinders?

all the same

Make sure you thoroughly communicate what your engine needs to your sales technician when you place your piston order.
