Jerome Powell isn't leaving the Federal Reserve Board. At least not for the next two years. In an onstage interview with David Rubenstein (his former boss at The Carlyle Group) Powell said he plans to finish his four-year term as Fed chair, which ends in May 2026. After that, he'll still have two years left on his term as a governor, which could leave the door open to a third go-around as chair. But he was not ready to share his thinking on the matter. "I have nothing for you on that today," Powell said. The backdrop for the conversation was, of course, this fall's presidential election, which could send former President Donald Trump return to the White House for a second term. Of course, Trump and Powell bumped heads in 2019. At the time, the then-president even contemplated firing Powell or stripping him of his chairmanship (though it is unclear if he would have had the authority to do so). And to make tensions higher, some in Trump's corner are calling for significant changes to how the central bank functions. See what Powell had to say about this and more in my latest for American Banker. https://lnkd.in/ePNWapaK

Bank earnings season Day 2: Goldman Sachs says it will "moderate" the pace of its share repurchases after the Federal Reserve Board hit the investment banking giant with an unexpectedly large capital requirement. Goldman is pushing back on the Fed's latest stress test results. During the company's second-quarter earnings call, CEO David Solomon said Goldman is "engaging" with regulators to better understand the "discrepancy" between the way it views its ability to handle an economic downturn, and how the Fed views it.
