Two of our 2023 Hero Dog handlers recently joined American Humane president and CEO Dr. Robin Ganzert on the Robin’s Nest podcast to share more about their Hero Dogs and the important roles they play. Maverick, the 2023 Hero Dog Award winner and Therapy Dog Finalist, travels with his owner Kelly, offering steadfast support to military members and their families as an official USO member. Moxie, the Service Hero Dog Finalist, provides invaluable assistance to her owner Katie, who has Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a group of rare, inherited connective tissue disorders. So many dogs in our lives have an inspiring story to tell. Share your pup’s today at herodogawards.org—and listen to this episode of Robin’s Nest wherever you get your podcasts! https://bit.ly/4cYlnus #herodog #americanhumane #herodogawards

It’s with heavy hearts we share that Chickel, a retired Military Working Dog, has passed away. Chickel served alongside his handler, U.S. Air Force Staff Sergeant Kyle Johnson, with unwavering loyalty and courage. The pair served together in Korea where Chickel worked as a patrol dog. In 2021, American Humane had the unique honor of facilitating the reunion of the two battle buddies, and Sergeant Kyle Johnson adopted his best friend. Thank you for your heroic efforts, Chickel. You will be missed dearly. Learn more about Chickel’s incredible story: https://bit.ly/3BWZI41

Recently, we reunited two retired Military Working Dogs, Aida and Poker, with their former Marine Corps handlers, and best friends, Sgt. Dalton and Sgt. Isaac. A special thank you to CBS and Omar Villafranca for joining us to capture the heartwarming reunion and tell this incredible story! We are honored to be part of Aida and Poker’s journey and we will continue to support them by paying for veterinary bills for the rest of their lives, ensuring they can enjoy the comfortable retirement they deserve.

As we approach the Fourth of July, many of us are celebrating the holiday surrounded by loved ones. But for our furry friends, it can be a stressful and even dangerous time. An initiative led by the American Pyrotechnics Safety & Education Foundation focuses on protecting pets during the Fourth of July festivities. The noise and commotion of fireworks are often stressful and frightening for animals, and this campaign aims to help pet owners take proactive steps to ensure their pets feel safe and secure.
