Dorchester County, SC is a fast‐growing county in the heart of the South Carolina Lowcountry. Part of the three‐county Charleston metropolitan area, Dorchester County offers a mix of suburban and rural lifestyles with Charleston and North Charleston nearby. The population was 136,555 in the 2010 Census, an increase of 41.6% from the 2000 Census. Nearby to Dorchester County are the South Carolina beaches (30‐60 minutes), the Santee Cooper lakes (30 minutes), and the Blue Ridge Mountains (3‐4 hours). Dorchester County offers numerous outdoor recreation opportunities, including the terminus of the Edisto River Canoe Trail at Givhans Ferry State Park and the 16,000+ acre Beidler Forest. Minor league baseball, hockey, and soccer teams are in the metropolitan area, and the annual Family Circle Cup tennis tournament is held in adjoining Berkeley County. Dorchester County operates under a Council Administrator form of government and has 766 full‐time positions. A seven‐member County Council is elected by district and provides policy direction to the County. The County Council appoints the County Administrator, the County Clerk, the County Attorney, and the Delinquent Tax Collector. The County Administrator is responsible for the administration of all departments under the control of the County Council. The present County administrator has been in the position since 2004 and is assisted by a Deputy County Administrator and a Chief Financial Officer.   • Dorchester County is excited to announce the appointment of Denise M. Christmas as Deputy Administrator/Chief Financial Officer and Adam Davis as Deputy Administrator of Operations. Ms. Christmas brings 24 years of dedicated county government experience in South Carolina. She most recently served as Deputy County Administrator/Chief Financial Officer with Beaufort County, where she oversaw procurement, finance, payroll, grants, accounts payable, accounts receivable, fixed assets, and internal audit preparation. She has also held key roles in Calhoun and Orangeburg Counties and holds a bachelor's degree in Accounting and Business Administration from Limestone College and is a Certified Government Finance Officer. Denise's first day was June 10, 2024. Adam Davis joins us as the new Deputy Administrator of Operations, effective July 15, 2024. Mr. Davis will oversee Facilities and Grounds, Parks and Recreation, Capital Projects, and Fleet Maintenance. He brings a wealth of experience from his previous roles in Dorchester School Districts Two and Four, the City of Walterboro, and Chester and Berkeley County School Districts. He holds a Bachelor of Administration and a Master of Public Administration from Liberty University. Join us in welcoming Denise Christmas and Adam Davis to Dorchester County!

  • Under the leadership of the Dorchester County Emergency Management Department, representatives from Dorchester County Government and local organizations united in our new Emergency Operations Center to lead storm recovery efforts. Each event requires resources, time, and coordination to support our community. We are incredibly grateful for all our partners, staff, law enforcement, and volunteers who assessed damages, conducted community outreach, and staffed our call center.

  • Yesterday, Dorchester County Council held a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the brand new Library on the Ashley River at 2824 Bacons Bridge Road, Summerville! This 20,000 sq. ft. facility, located across from Ashley River Park, is set to serve our fastest-growing community with expected visitors of 750-1000 per day. It offers classrooms, computer centers, event/meeting rooms, private study rooms, a teen space, and a maker’s space! Remarks were given by Dorchester County Council Chairman Todd Friddle, Vice Chairman David Chinnis, Councilman Jay Byars, Library Director Robert Antill, and Library Board Chairman Bill Collins. The Blessing and Dedication was delivered by Reverend Jeffrey Salley. Chairman Friddle said it best: "As we open the doors to this facility, let us remember the potential it holds to enrich our lives and strengthen our community. This is a place for everyone—a place where we can all come together to share knowledge, inspire one another, and build a brighter future." We want to thank all those involved in the project for creating such a beautiful and inviting space as our new library!

  • On May 29, 2024, the MUSC Children's Health Pediatric Trauma Program proudly presented awards to several Dorchester County Emergency Medical Services teams for their extraordinary contributions to pediatric emergency care and community outreach over the past year. Deputy Director Joe Crowder and Training Officer Josh Arrant were honored for their exceptional collaboration between MUSC and DCEMS, ensuring the effective use of the bike rodeo trailer for community outreach and injury prevention. Advanced EMT Eddie Rivera, EMT Jeffrey Phipps, Paramedic Shift Supervisor Scott Chisholm, Paramedic Crew Chief Marco Simard, Paramedic Crew Chief Angelina Johnson, & EMT Jason Bell were recognized for their response during a major vehicle collision involving multiple pediatric patients. Their ability to triage, assess, and deliver top-quality care under pressure is commendable. Emergency Medical Technician John Gunter and Paramedic Crew Chief Jennifer Dargis were acknowledged for their prompt and expert response to a critical incident involving a child struck by a motor vehicle. Their swift actions and expert care were crucial in stabilizing the critically injured patient. Join us in celebrating these incredible professionals who go above and beyond to ensure the safety and well-being of our community's children.
