About us
El Pomar is a general purpose foundation, which means the trustees approve grants across a broad spectrum of focus areas, including: arts and culture, civic and community initiatives, education, health, and human services. Since 1937, trustees of the Foundation have approved nearly 12,600 grants totaling more than $431 million to benefit the state of Colorado. Currently, El Pomar contributes more than $20 million annually through grants to nonprofit organizations and government equivalents across Colorado. When grant dollars alone are not the solution, El Pomar Foundation creates and operates programs that encourage leadership and promote community development. While each program is different, the collective goal is to create an environment where communities thrive. Spencer Penrose was an entrepreneur and a visionary. Mr. Penrose's approach was straightforward: build for tomorrow. He did this in two ways. In a literal sense, he helped create some of Colorado Springs' most famous landmarks, The BROADMOOR, a world-class resort in the foothills of Colorado's Rocky Mountains, the Pikes Peak Highway and the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. Penrose's second approach to building for tomorrow began in 1937 when he and his wife Julie established a living legacy, El Pomar Foundation. Mr. Penrose left the majority of his estate to El Pomar upon his death in 1939. Julie Penrose succeeded her husband as El Pomar president and served in that position with a generous and indomitable spirit. She left the majority of her estate to El Pomar in 1956. As El Pomar eagerly continues its journey into tomorrow, its direction comes from its past. Spencer and Julie Penrose's lives, as they lived them, provide the principles that will continue to guide their foundation now and in the future.

Meet Sofia Gagliardi, who is interning for El Pomar's Investment Office and Fellowship Alumni Relations program. She will begin her Junior year at University of Colorado Boulder in the fall as a Business Administration major with a double emphasis in Finance and Marketing. She hopes to study abroad next spring in Japan, as she has already traveled to Tokyo while completing a business trek last summer. She has hiked nine 14ers in Colorado and would like to finish more in the future. Sofia is enjoying delving into El Pomar’s investment strategies while interning this summer. She's also pleased with the opportunity to network with Fellowship Alumni and collaborate with current Fellows.

We were pleased to attend the recent grand reopening of the Space Foundation Discovery Center and see inside the new El Pomar Space Gallery! With the Drone Zone, Boeing Additive Manufacturing Space Laboratory, Mars Robotics Laboratory, and many interactive exhibits and space equipment, it's an impressive and immersive experience. Space Foundation Discovery Center is the region’s first museum dedicated to space, science, and technology. How special to have this unique experience located in our community! #spacefoundationdiscoverycenter

The Will Rogers Rodeo, the brainchild of Spencer Penrose and first held in 1938, was a monumental event and the first for his newly constructed Will Rogers Stadium. Arthur Perkins, who Penrose had hired to oversee facilities at Will Rogers Shrine, helped manage the 1938 rodeo. His wife Grace had her hat (now on display at Penrose Heritage Museum) signed by all of the rodeo stars and local celebrities, including Penrose! This year marks the event's 87th showing, now called Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo and held in the Norris Penrose Event Center! Running from July 9-13, it features more than 200 contestants! Some of this year's stars include Boyd Polhamus, Bob Tallman, Matt Tarr, Bryce Redo, Cauy Kraut, Jessica Blair-Fowlkes, and Dusti Dickerson. The event that started with Penrose's showman's vision 87 years ago continues to be part of the rich history, tourism, and economic tapestry of the Pikes Peak region.

As a follow-up to last year's panel discussion on the state of water in the Pikes Peak region, El Pomar's Pikes Peak Heritage Series recently convened a group of local leaders to discuss how the region plans for future water needs. Thanks to our moderator and panelists for their presentations and thoughtful responses to audience questions. Missed the event or just interested in learning more about this topic?
