#DYK: Generative AI models demand approximately ten times the electricity of traditional internet inquiries. Increased power demand will continue to grow as #AI expands. In a new report released today by EPRI, it is projected that data centers could consume up to 9% of U.S. electricity generation by 2030—more than double the amount currently used. This report notes that in the U.S., renewed electric load growth is being driven by data centers, industrial onshoring, and electrifying transportation, among others. Clusters of new, large point loads are testing the ability of electric companies to keep pace. “The data center boom requires closer collaboration between large data center owners and developers, utilities, government, and other stakeholders to ensure that we can power the needs of AI while maintaining reliable, affordable power to all customers” said EPRI Vice President of Electrification and Sustainable Energy Strategy David Porter. The EPRI Climate READi team and researchers at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) collaborated on a recent project to predict how the risks of hurricane-induced power outages are expected to evolve based on climate changes. The findings included high-level estimates of changing risk under a potential worst-case climate scenario. The results can help power companies and other stakeholders better understand how to prepare, mitigate potential damage, and protect the locations expected to be under the greatest risk. 📰 Learn more in this article by Utility Dive: https://lnkd.in/eU-4zKEv 🗺 See the interactive map: https://lnkd.in/e5zwFeM6 📱 Learn more about EPRI’s Climate READi here: https://lnkd.in/eqvyeD4U

EPRI President and CEO Arshad Mansoor recently spoke at Eurelectric’s Power Summit 2024 about the global power demand, driven in part by the growing needs of AI/data centers, electrification, and onshoring manufacturing. Thanks to Eurelectric for inviting EPRI to speak, and for publishing a summary of Mansoor’s remarks earlier this month. “Ten to fifteen percent of the grid is built to supply demand for 1% of the time, or 87 hours in a year. We’ve got to change that,” said Mansoor. View the full Eurelectric article here: https://lnkd.in/e6ZqVpXH Mansoor’s remarks come as EPRI recently released a data center analysis, focused on U.S. #AI and data center energy consumption. The report found data centers could consume up to 9 percent of U.S. electricity generation by 2030—more than double the amount currently used. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/efq7waeV

📣 We are excited to be in Porto (Portugal), kicking off the European project EU-DREAM, which will simplify complex energy management processes and boost customer awareness, trust, and confidence through an #AI-based assistant and an #NLP intermediary. 🤝 As one of the collaborators in the project, #EPRIEurope will lead the project's Communication, Exploitation and Dissemination. We will also be providing technical support for the development of the Irish Living Lab (LL). 🏘 This LL aims to address consumers' empowerment to optimise energy usage in Ireland through real-time data analysis and AI algorithms, ensuring efficient self-consumption and minimizing grid reliance. We are happy to work side by side on this LL with our esteemed colleagues from SSE Airtricity and DCSix Technologies. 👉🏼 Check out more about this project at https://lnkd.in/dBwUV89C  We look forward to seeing this project progress. 💡 𝗘𝗨-𝗗𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗠: 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆! 📲 Mário Teixeira Couto Mariana Jimenez Gianluca Lipari EPRI #EnergyTransition #EnergyMarket

In EPRI's latest insight report, researchers study global and U.S. models to extract regional-specific steps for crafting practical, viable, and cost-effective strategies. #Decarbonization is not a one-size-fits-all solution—it requires different approaches for different regions and local energy operations. The study, using IPCC and EPRI's Low-Carbon Resources Initiative (LCRI) data, highlights key factors such as differences in wind and solar resource quality, CO2 storage, policy design, and other elements that can influence the path to net-zero. Authored by Steven Rose and Anahi Molar-Cruz, this resource aims to help remove uncertainty and provide a scientific basis for which to develop climate policy and company strategy and communication.

In a new article from IEEE Electrification Magazine, EPRI’s Jackie Baum explores how inexpensive industrial computing and secure telecommunications are advancing control of microgrid assets. These microgrids, operating in tandem, could help improve grid reliability, power outage recovery times, and the use of distributed energy resources.   As the number of microgrids increases, so will the need to optimize them. By coordinating nested and series-connected microgrids, the article explains, we can enhance the reliability of distribution systems and support critical operations that pave the way for a more resilient and reliable energy future.  Check out the full article to learn more 📢  https://lnkd.in/eKaSZJZW
